The Black Dunes Geographic Location in Hellverse | World Anvil

The Black Dunes

The Black Dunes are a massive expanse of sifting black sands on the Plaguebound side of Hell Proper. At one point, the terrain was a vast sea, the last in Hell actually.

Geography

Rolling, Ebon hills of sand reflect silver under the blood red sky. Without trees, water, lava, or rock structures for miles around, The Black Dunes are blistering well before noon and freezing by dusk. There is a frightening emptiness when one is left to the whims of the desert, far from one of a handful of cities or outposts that the population of this desolate land swarms towards like moths to a candle. There is a frightening tale that the dunes are a reflection of the void itself, a sea of black that sifts and wanes in unknowing ways. If one rose to the top of one of the undulating dunes, they could see the sands bleed red, reflecting the sky back up as if to reject it's color. In the distance the crumpled shapes of cities and mountains litter a horizon. Occasionally the sand may give way to an older secret, like a skeleton of a long extinct sea beast, maw agape as if it were still hungry.
