Norran

Norrans are a humanoid species inhabiting the Helerin Archipelago. They are one of the native peoples of the islands. The Norran are a formidable and ancient people, known for their robust physiques, exceptional craftsmanship, and deeply rooted traditions.

The Norran are a people defined by their connection to the earth, their mastery of craftsmanship, and their unwavering commitment to tradition and kin. They are built for endurance, both physically and culturally, and their legacy is one of strength, resilience, and unshakable pride. The Norran are master miners and metalworkers, renowned across the Helerin Archipelago for their unparalleled skills.   Culturally, the Norran are a proud and independent people, with a strong sense of identity tied to their ancestral lands and traditions. They form tight-knit communities and are deeply loyal to their kin and leaders. While they maintain an isolationist stance, the Norran do engage in trade with other nations, particularly for goods that cannot be produced within their mountainous homes. However, they do so with caution, always ensuring that their own security and way of life remain uncompromised.

Physical appearance

Norran are tall (often reaching almost 8 feet in height), and powerfully-built. Their skin is dark blue-black, and their eyes are golden. The muscular build reflects their resilience and strength.

Lifespan and growth

Norran may live for around 200 years, with some exceeding this by a futehr 50 years or more. Norran reach adulthood at around the age of 30, but are not considered "mature" until the age of 50.

Innate attributes and abilities

The Norran are physically adapted to the harsh environments in which they live. Their bodies are naturally resilient to cold and hard labor, and they possess remarkable stamina, allowing them to work tirelessly in the mines and forges for hours on end. Their strength is legendary, with even the average Norran capable of feats of endurance and power that would challenge many other peoples.   The Norran are known for their quiet determination and unyielding resolve. They are slow to trust outsiders, but once that trust is earned, they are steadfast allies. In battle, they are fearsome opponents, their heavy armor and powerful weapons making them a formidable force.   A small proportion of Norran are able to use magic, and these are invariably drawn to the art of Shaping.

Populations

Norran are the fifth most numerous of all the species inhabiting the islands, making up approximately 7% of the total population.   Norran realms exist in the mountains of both Forbin and Remon. A third realm in the Clouded Crags of Teros was destroyed by the forces of Tekkaron in the years following the arrival of the Newcomers. Their mountain cities, both above and below ground, are marvels of engineering and architecture, featuring vast halls, intricately carved stone pillars, and hidden chambers filled with treasures. These cities serve not only as homes but also as fortresses, designed to withstand both the ravages of time and external threats.   Norran society is highly structured, governed by a strict caste system that has endured for millennia. This system dictates the roles and responsibilities of each individual, from the ruling caste of warrior-craftsmen who govern and protect their cities, to the miners and artisans who extract and shape the riches of the earth. Each caste is deeply respected, and the Norran take great pride in their work, whether it be the crafting of a fine blade, the carving of intricate stonework, or the forging of powerful alliances.
  • Goldfolk - the ruling tier of Norran communities, including royalty and nobility.
  • Ironfolk - the craftspeople and engineers.
  • Stonefolk - the labouring class, including miners and other manual workers.
A small number of Norran dwell amongst the Newcomes in the major realms of Helerin. These are generally enterprising Ironfolk or Stonefolk.
