Citadel of the Serpent

The Citadel of the Serpent, an imposing white-stone fortress, dominates the skyline of Gathansin, perched like a watchful guardian atop the rocky outcrop at the town’s western edge. Its towering spire, shaped like a snake’s head with its maw gaping, has become an enduring symbol of both Gathansin’s strength and the enigmatic Mistress Bantheen, who rules from within its walls. From this high perch, the citadel oversees the town and the surrounding bay, its watchful eyes ever alert to the dangers that lurk beyond.

The citadel’s unique architecture combines practicality with a flair for the dramatic. Thick stone walls encircle the fortress, reinforced at key points by projecting bastions that provide ample cover for defenders. Within these walls, the keep stands tall and forbidding, its narrow windows and iron-bound doors designed to withstand both assault and siege. A broad, winding ramp spirals around the outside of the citadel, ascending to the upper levels. At the pinnacle of the tower, the stone serpent’s head gazes out across the bay, its eyes made of polished obsidian that gleam in the sunlight.

Mistress Bantheen appears to be ancient, but she is a formidable figure: sharp of mind and commanding of presence despite her advancing years. Her once-ebon hair, now streaked with silver, falls in long, elegant braids that reach her waist, and her gaze is as piercing as ever. The Mistress has ruled Gathansin for over five decades, outlasting rivals, would-be usurpers, and foreign meddlers alike. Her reputation for shrewd diplomacy, unwavering resolve, and judicious use of force has made her a legend in her own lifetime.   Bantheen is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Mar Mabon Townships - a woman who has guided her city through the upheavals and machinations that define this volatile region.   The Mistress’s personal quarters, located within the serpent’s head, offer a panoramic view of the Mabon Channel and the bustling town below. The walls of her chambers are adorned with tapestries depicting the rise and fall of Gathansin’s fortunes over the centuries, and a large silver-framed mirror, rumoured to possess mystical properties, stands beside her writing desk. It is said that Mistress Bantheen consults this mirror before making any major decision, seeking counsel from the spirits of her ancestors who once ruled the town. Despite her age, she remains deeply involved in Gathansin’s affairs, meeting daily with captains, merchants, and envoys, her mind as keen as ever.

Ocharr Ranteen

Below, the lower floors of the citadel are dedicated to the military guard who serve as both protectors of the town and enforcers of the Mistress’s will. Known as the Serpent Guard, these soldiers are clad in scaled armour the colour of reptile scales, and they patrol the winding ramp and outer walls with disciplined precision. A garrison of two hundred men and women reside within the barracks, while a smaller, elite cadre of personal guards are stationed closer to her private quarters. Led by the dangerously-ambitious Commader Ranteen, these warriors are known for their unyielding loyalty and fearsome combat prowess.   The citadel also serves as a hub of local governance, with council chambers and audience halls occupying the middle floors. Here, Mistress Bantheen meets with advisors, foreign envoys, and the captains of Gathansin’s merchant fleet, discussing everything from trade agreements to the defence of the town’s lucrative maritime routes.
