Yaren Fyodir Garil En Yottav (Yah-Ren F-yo-dear Gah-ril Ehn Yi-oh-tav)

Duke Yaren Fyodir Garil En Yottav, AoC

Rare and miraculous things happen through out the world. A lowly farm boy becoming a Knight of Honor and Fortune by his own merits. Young love blooming and overcoming many an obstacle or danger. Even a case or two of divine intervention. But no one, not one of any race, faith, or creed could find it possible for a Vampyre, a Beast of the night and predator of Humans, would choose to be a Private Detective. But to the bewilderment of anyone who knows his true nature, Yaren Fyodir Garil En Yottav, took up such a trade. And even excells at it. With courtious and professional conduct.

Personal history

Born as Yaren Fyodir Garil En Yottav 4th Aeon, 14th of Maras, 1344 A.E. third Son of Duke Yosef Makil En Yottav and Duchess Onestasya Daemitria En Yottav at Yottavgroff Castle in The Kingdom of Esterval. Yaren grew up along side his older brother, Vektar Royva En Yottav, a broad and militant Estervali Patriot. And the middle brother, Andrey Vaseli Dirit En Yottav, a poet and painter in the community of artists in Esterval.

The En Yottav Duke raised his sons to be intelligent, industrious, patriotic, sporty, and loyal to the future and profit of The Noble House of En Yottav. But not all of the boys took to each trait. Vektar was ideal to Yosefs vision for his sons. But Vektar indulged his intelligence far too less in comparison to how often he indulged his sportiness and patriotism. Andrey however was intelligent, and industrious. But took more to poetry and painting than he did to affairs of state and the family intrigues. Yaren himself was not as sporty, not as intelligent, and not so patriotic. At least, not in the beginning. Stifled as he was by a potent social anxiety every time he encountered his tutors and even family members. Yosef thought to push Yarens development forward by sending him to Gystergroff Academy of the Sciences.

Yaren protested. Reluctant to go to a place overflowing with strangers, and unwilling to spend time away from his mother, whom he'd been more close to than the rest of his family. However, his father Yosef would hear none of it. And sent him under initial restraint, then in lamenting compliance. Yaren vowed to return. Soon after arriving at Gystergroff, he was treated as combative by the teachers for his reluctance to interact with the class. But thanks to the understanding of a handful of considerate teachers, Yaren found a home away from home. Slowly, but surely. In his time there, Yaren learned many different subjects at Gystergroff. Alchemy, Brewcraft, but best of all, he learned the Detectives trade. Ever entranced by the rigors and intrigue of investigation and the solving of puzzles of evidence. He even had the chance to apprentice under a local detective, Yazim Al Zulhuari. With whom he solved several perplexing cases that others called unsolvable. And learned how to navigate his social anxiety.

But eventually, Yarens father sent men to retrieve him. Because Vektar, as broad and ideal an heir as he was, was not wise enough to keep from provoking another Estervali noble. A duel of honor had transpired after Vektar had insulted another noble. But the duel ended with Vektar taking a longsword through his throat. He died after a long period of bleeding and choking indignantly. Andrey refused to take up the Dukedom and used money of his own to stave off anyone hired by his father to retrieve him. Leaving Yaren as the only choice to consider. Though Yosef still considered him to be unfit.

And so Yaren returned home after eight years away. To take up a mantle that he no longer held any interest in. Yet, Yaren still desired to reconcile the past and develop a relationship with his father. As tenuous as it was, Yaren thought it was worth the sorrow of the Estervali Court. Thusly, in 1367, Yaren became the new Duke of En Yottav when his father lost his faculties in the final three years of Yosefs life. A friend of the family was in the room with Yosef and Yaren when Yosef passed. Commenting that he hardly recognized the man in the bed to be the Yosef En Yottav he knew. A hard won closeness that the two had missed out on finally bloomed while time had at last come.

In 1373, Yaren recieved two things from his brother, Andrey. A letter explaining things, and an eight year old boy named Nycolas Piatislav En Yottav. Yarens brother Andrey had married a local woman in The City of Telivorg without leave from their father. The mother died in child birth, and Andrey was bed ridden with Blackvein and would not risk his son sharing the sickness that had taken him. The letter explained that Andrey had dispatched his estate and holdings to Yottavgroff already, and that he hoped that Yaren would raise Nycolas. And despite the years apart, Yaren accepted Nycolas into Yottavgroff Castle and loved him as his own son. Beginning as a combative relationship, with Nycolas being a stubborn youth. But in time, an understanding of each other arose from the heated arguments and lecturing after Nycolas would land himself in trouble. But eventually, the two were as close as father and son.

In 1401, at the age of 57. Yaren was called to court in The City of Estran to deliberate with his King and fellow Lords on growing hostilities with The Kingdom of Dekmire, the long time rival of Esterval. During the proceedings, a heated debate between five Estervali Barons and two of the other Dukes had graduated to an armed fight. Knives soon materialized in the hands of the Barons and in the confusion, Yaren was stabbed in the gut. He bled seemingly endlessly. The light fading from his eyes, he barely noticed a figure walking towards him amid the chaos of the Estervali Conclave. He would awake later in an unfamiliar room, with a man he was unfamiliar with.

The man identified himself as Veornon Malin, a long lost son of The Alder House of Malin in Dekmire. Explaining that he was 374 years old, not by magic, or craven concoctions made by Alchemy. But by the wicked sway of Vampyria. Veornon told Yaren that he was dying, no Physician Alchemyst, no magic or faith could save him. But he could. Veornon offered him a wicked reprieve from all the hands and shadows of Death. To walk in darkness eternal with hungry eyes, yet without a need to be a Monster. Yaren thought of Nycolas, of his family castle, and could speak no other words than "I accept."

Yaren, the Duke of En Yottav, died in a concealed room deep beneath the streets of Estran. But arose again as one of the Ofirat Vampyres. The Vampyres curse proved to be far more difficult than any episode of social anxiety that Yaren had ever faced. Yaren had to learn his own way of quieting the thirst. As every Vampyre must. A delicate dance that few if any could understand. Yaren found a boon in livestock and wild animals. And the occasional mugger or highwayman. But in his fragile war within, another casulty was prospectively at risk. His place in the Estervali Court. Which only ever met during the day. Eventually however, he learned of Daylight Glamour. An Alchemical potion that enabled a Vampyre to walk in Sunlight for a brief period of time. Journeying in secret by a merchants ship to The City of Abkar Bijan, where the restrictions of Alchemy were not so dogmatic as they were in The Heartland. After acquiring a case of premade mixtures of Daylight Glamour, he then learned the recipe and method to brew it himself and returned home.

Yaren knew that he would only be able to appear in court for so long before someone began to wonder why he seemed unchanged by the ravages of time as other Humans were. He came to the conclusion that he ought to prepare Nycolas to take up the ownership and administration of the En Yottav estate, as well as inherit the Dukedom. Nycolas knew his uncles true nature, and loved him all the same. Even when faced with the predatory glances that Yaren could rarely help himself about when he went long periods without blood. The two devised a way to play out a false death for Yaren that no one would suspect. Yaren would make his way by carriage to Estran and would find himself a casulty in an unfortunate fall on a bridge that had been in dire need of repair for years. As a Vampyre, Yaren was capable of appearing dead, as well as appearing as though his neck were snapped. Yaren was declared dead by Estervali Physician Alchemysts on the 23rd of Filoras, 1408 A.E. and made good his escape in the company of his Sire, Veornon Malin.

Yaren kept in contact with his nephew by the odd letter collected from various dead drops around the Dukedom of En Yottav. Even managing to meet and catch up over the years. But eventually, Yaren would have to endure one of the torments of an immortal life, watching someone you love die of old age. Nycolas died at the age of 98 on the 16th of Draeduas, 1463 A.E. Yaren cried black tears saying goodbye to the man who'd been like a son to him. And vowed to be an unseen guardian and friend to his children forever after. Ensuring for centuries that the En Yottavs would come to no harm, or hardship. While keeping a distance.

By 1707, Yaren had established a trusted network of spies, informants, and friends. As well as funds and resources to empower them and himself to accomplish the safeguarding of his family in Esterval. What's more, Veornon and Yaren had parted ways in peace and friendship several decades ago. Freeing Yaren to pursue a passion he had long left lying. The work of a Private Detective. Yaren began his adventure in the trade in The City of Vyrantis, keeping his operation small, modest, and available to even the most lowly of commoners. He would eventually move operations to The City of Mydgorod in Esterval. And then, in 1734, he moved to The City of Dekmire. Where he continues his Detectives trade to this very day alongside his business partner, Karn Yergon, an Askan renegade turned detective. Downing bottles of Daylight Glamour when he has a need to move about by day. And solving cases that others can't seem to make sense of.

Education

Yaren studided under various tutors and masters at Yottavgroff Castle. Learning statecraft, mathematics, accouting, reading, writing, linguistics, warcraft, horsemanship, swordsmanship, and political science as per the required education of the Lords of Esterval.

When Yaren attended school at the Gystergroff Academy of the Sciences in The City of Vindragrod, he learned architecture, metallurgy, dance, Brewcraft, Alchemy, sociology, masonry, and investigative science. Becoming one of the youngest detectives to have ever been.

On top of all Yaren has learned in formal education, he also has a wealth of experience in the utilization of these skills and crafts. And has consulted on a number of other cases conducted by a small number of contemporaries. Keeping his involvement as minimal as possible so as to keep himself outside the sight of those who make it their lifes work to hunt Vampyres. Which has led to him gaining knowledge of how the criminal underworlds operate.

Employment

The first profession Yaren ever took on was that of a Private Detective. Though he was a Nobles son and heir to the Dukedom of En Yottav, he found immense joy in the profession. And fought to try and remain in it. However, his fathers condition led to him insisting on Yaren returning home to take up the Dukedom.

Yarens next professional adventure was that of the Duke of En Yottav. Ruling over the dukedom from his family seat, Yottavgroff Castle. Where he conducted himself nobly and justly as the Duke. Ensuring the prosperity of his subjects.

In his centuries as a Vampyre, Yaren took up a number of occupations. Such as Barkeeper, Brew Master, Real Estate Surveyor, Sommelier, Innkeeper, Cook, and Accountant.

But ultimately, Yarens first professional love had always been Detectives Work. When the opertunity to work as a Private Detective came around again, he practically sprinted after it. And has been doing it ever since.

Failures & Embarrassments

Yaren has had a number of unfortunate incidents where he's lost control of himself and taken the life of an innocent. An occasional occurrence in situations where he hasn't prepared himself for any sort of social interaction. Yaren still feels a great deal of shame for these unfortunate incidents.

Mental Trauma

Yaren has had to endure a great deal of grief over his five-hundred years as a Vampyre. Not only seeing family die, but a number of friends as well. Compelling him to contemplate waiting out one morning without a bottle of Daylight Glamour to burn with the rising of the sun. But his collection of good memories have led him to seek counciling from trust worthy individuals for guidance and an unburdening of his mind or conscience.

Yet those traumas of his lingering Human side are often dwarved by the consistent battle with the predator inside. The ever present thirst that drives most Vampyres to become cold, cruel, sadistic murderers at best. And horrific, inhuman, unreasonable monsters at worst. But thanks to his sire, Veornon Malin, Yaren learned of a way to sate the beast that also accomodates his Human conscience. Many a murderer, rapist, or sadist lurk in the world. Human Monsters, huntable only by Greater Monsters. Yaren remembers well some words of wisdom his sire imparted before they parted ways. "Rare in this world is the Wolf that fights for the Sheep."

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Even from a young age, Yaren has had some traits that many Nobles unfortunately lack. Empathy, decency, compassion, determination, and humility. As such, his highest motivation has always been to do what's right by everyone. Standing fervently behind a sense of justice alongside a sense of right and wrong. He kept these traits even after he became a Vampyre. In fact, the abilities accorded to him by his Vampyric condition have only strengthened his determination to live by his sense of Justice, finding himself more capable of upholding it than he could as a Human.

Vices & Personality flaws

Yaren is a strong sufferer of social anxiety. Despite the centuries of interaction with others. Both necessary and unexpected.

Hygiene

Yaren keeps himself clean and neat in every way. Professional, Social, and in Private. If an Estervali Vedtma saw him bathing, she'd think he were a Daemon rather than a Vampyre. Since it's a common folk belief in Esterval that Vampyres cannot survive contact with any body of water. She'd be far more awe struck to see him even bothering to use soap.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Yaren keeps contacts in the Criminal Underworld of various cities. In The City of Dekmire, he keeps contact with the infamous Thief Darion Rook. Among the Gangs, Yaren occasionally buys information from Kanto Marak, the Dwarven Boss of a Crime Syndicate with operations all across Dekmire.

Family Ties

Yaren continues his involvement with his family, The Noble House of En Yottav. A number of the living members of the family are in contact with him. Most notably, his great great grandniece Zeviska Carinna En Yottav. Who is the young Lady of Court at Yottavgroff Castle.

Religious Views

As a mortal man, Yaren believed in Aemar the All-Father. And in the Temple of the Faith of Aemar the All-Father. But as a Vampyre, Yaren finds it hard at times to accept that there's an Almighty God watching from on high. Especially when he takes up cases where people have disappeared. Only to be found in hidden chambers, chained to the cold stone walls like hounds. Often finding them malnourished, tortured, beaten, and far worse. With their captors not being bandits or even Vampyres. But other Humans.

Yaren will often say that in terms of faith, he's at something of a crossroads veiled by a fog as dark as coal dust. With no means of seeing the correct path forward. Saying that all he can do is wade through the fog to find his Right Path.

Hobbies & Pets

Yaren stopped keeping pets when he'd lost his last cat. He does however, sponsor a number of animal rescue groups in various communities in several cities across the Heartland. In recent years, he's come to prefer the company of stray dogs and wayward pigeons.

A recent hobby he's taken up is the tracking and collecting of ornate Abkari Lamps. As well as a consistent collecting of rare books. He has at least 44 tomes that many modern collectors would willingly plunge themselves into poverty to collect even one of these books. Yaren has even claimed to have perused the pages of the infamous and vastly legendary Helaericon. Claiming to have even been close to purchasing the nefarious book. But ultimately passed the book up in favor of a profoundly rare book on extinct herbs. Professing that his decision was a wise one, since the bookseller managed to become the latest addition to the list of victims of the books supposed curse. The bookseller and his book shop managed to catch fire while the bookseller slept in his apartment above it.

Speech

Yaren speaks clear and calmly unless he has to shout across a significant distance. Though in conversation it seems like he's taking his time with every letter. Not so much time that a sentence takes a whole year. But enough that one can't help but note it for its peculiarity. Despite this, many who speak to Yaren will say that a conversation with him is very pleasant. Not just because he always seems calm and clear headed, but also because he very rarely swears.

Wealth & Financial state

Yaren is always coy about the precise abundance of wealth he has. While a sum of what coin he has has never been mentioned, it's been theorized by his friends that he's worth nearly 1,000,000 in gold pieces alone. Since he always seems to have enough coin for things. And seems to receive royalties for a number of articles. From Art to Alcohol. It's long been rumored that Dyikyia Mandragyora Vodekya was not the invention of the founder of The Black Garden Brewcraft Company, but of a secret patron. And visiters to Yarens residence have seen a case of the Vodekya inside every now and again.

In terms of real estate, a suspicion of Yarens patronage at The Bolshayia Stenya, a grand theater of the arts in Estran, is quite strong. On the plaque at the front of the building listing patrons who financed the theaters restoration in 1403, there's one name alone that stands out. Because it's not a name at all. It's a title. "The Holder of our Eternal Gratitude." When Yaren was Human, he would take his nephew Nycolas there when they held epic plays and other performances. He loved them.
