House Virelius, the ruling family of the Duchy of Carteia, is an ancient and unyielding line of abjurers sworn to defend the northern shores of Halruaal. Known as the Stormwardens, they command the Citadel of Aetherglass and maintain the empire’s most powerful protective wards. Their magic is precise, their rule disciplined, and their loyalty to the Empire absolute. To trespass their domain is to test the strength of spells woven like stone.
Structure
House Virelius has been a major vassal house under House Aetius. Led by Duke Arrian Virelius, the House is currently far from a sterotypical nuclear family. In turn, House Virelius has many vassal houses underneath it to help govern the duchy.
Culture
Members of House Virelius are disciplined, scholarly, and exacting. They prize control over chaos, mastery over impulse. The family is known for its ritual duels of shielding, wherein contenders must outlast one another using only defensive magic, a tradition dating back to their founder.
Their children are raised under strict magical tutelage, with each scion expected to contribute to the duchy’s magical infrastructure before coming of age—be it reinforcing wards, designing new seal-scripts, or restoring ancient protections.
History
House Virelius claims descent from Virelius the Boundless, one of the Seven Archmages who founded the Halruaalian Empire. While the others expanded outward with conquest and flame, Virelius stayed behind to build walls, weave barriers, and tame the tempest. His descendants became the guardians of the realm’s northern gate. Through the ages, House Virelius has bred not just abjurers but also wardwrights, sealbinders, and a rare line of Aegismancers—wizards who specialize in large-scale, city-wide protective enchantments.
