Baron or Baroness - Augur

A Baron or Baroness is the title that is either hereditary or granted by anyone of at least the rank of Count or Countess. Typically a Baron or Baroness is a rural noble working either just outside a town or in a village (although most have residence in the local town). Similar to a Duke or Duchess, ranks of this or lower need not be the strongest in their family to be awarded the title (indeed they need not even be married as most Duke and Duchesses are). Regardless of their skill or power level, they are still addressed as a normal Baron or Baroness would be. Granted, being out in the boonies most of the time, a Baron hardly worries about being humiliated by their peers. However, many work on their skills if not for the simple reason of protecting themselves from rural threats such as the occasional bandit party or angry mob.

Responsibilities

A Baron of Halruaal is invested with little more than mayoral powers of a village or two and typically just acts like an advisor to the local Count.

Benefits

With fewer resources, and little in the way of a town guard protection, not much is protecting them from village threats. A Baron cannot remove a title unless they themselves granted a knight-ship.
