Kreniko Coup

The Kreniko Coup was the armed overthrow of Prince Mazaru Eramzir by a group of local nobles organized by Lady Minwa Nozari and the God Squad.   While most coups are bloodless affairs (or at least minimally bloody), the Kreniko coup was a terribly bloody battle between two committed forces in the Red Palace of Kreniko. Ultimately, this battle ended when God Squad was able to kill the Plague Dragon beneath the palace and then kill the Prince himself - allowing the insurgents to carry the day.    Lady Minwa NozariLord Usurper Kelka Akuzir, and Prince Mazaru Eramzir all died in this battle. Lady Ovwa Benibiski and Lady Malwa Akuzir only survived by magical interventions. The battle ended with Lord Wellim Bakari seizing the regional throne of the Vice-Kingdom of Mikena.

The Conflict

Prelude

Prince Mazaru Eramzir had never been particularly loyal to the reigning Emperor Sophan Eramzir - the two royals had bad blood between them and Mazaru had a rivalry with Sophan's predecessor.    Since 2016 ME, the Prince had been meddling with the powers of the Rot and the False Halcyon - two very dangerous sources of incredibly magic. Mazaru became increasingly delusional as he learned to balance these dark forces against each other. He became convinced that these apocalyptic could be controlled, contained, and mastered through magical training and personal manipulation of their avatars. And as the master of this power, it only made sense for him to claim the imperial throne as he had long desired.   As the emperor was distracted with the Great Esedetan War to the Southwest, the Prince had an excellent opportunity to mobilize his forces with attracting attention. As he did so, one of his own students and nobles began to piece together what he was doing: Lord Usurper Kelka Akuzir. Kelka launched a failed rebellion against the Prince, but was caught and imprisoned.    The God Squad used the remnants of the old rebellion, mobilized the reform faction in the city, and built new alliances to try and launch a second coup.
