Ekraht

In a long-forgotten tongue, this continent was "The land of abundant ash"- now, it is only Ekraht. The supervolcano in the middle of the continent remains the heart of the land culturally, politically, and religiously. Its ash enriches the land for centuries, only for the mountain to periodically drown the continent in poison and flame. It is a land where cycles of death and renewal play out in real time in a never ending circle. Part of this is inevitable, and part of it sits in a careful balance maintained by the kingdoms of Ekraht. Dragomanders, a source of magical power most commonly found here, produce toxic fumes that naturally coalesce in the central mountains before pouring down across the realm. For each dragomander, there must be a balance- Wind Dryads, descendants of the first demigod of the continent, can purify and suppress this toxic buildup. The push and pull of mortal action within that inevitable cycle of death and rebirth profoundly shapes the Ekrahtian worldview.   Ekraht is a fairly insulated continent, surrounded on all sides by either freezing forests or open ocean. Few have sought to invade the continent of ash, which stands alone as a fortress. That does not mean it is entirely isolated- bustling coastal trade routes East, North, and West bring in goods and travelers from Maradia, Ibith, and even tropical Suneka. Ekraht is also interconnected with the global teleportation circle system, allowing its most powerful magic users to venture to Inahng, Nafena, Stildane, and Sonev in an instant.   There is much here for foreigners to marvel at. In Northern Ekraht, the Empire of Zerua rules the coastline and stands as one of the largest contiguous empires in the world. In the heart of the supervolcano also sits the lair of Kemegi, the legendary Dragomander the size of a town. Across the continent live peculiar 'wind Dryads' capable of astonishing innate elemental magic. In the West, the empire of Esedeta has made an army of constructs to strip the mountains of stone and ore- including one of the two largest Kilusha deposits in the world.   While Ekraht may have been largely ignored by the Architects and much of the world at large, it remains one of the great population centers of the world and worthy of a visit for any traveler.

Geography

Ekraht is a massive peninsular subcontinent and island system. When combined with its largest island- Makal to the Northwest- its landmass is greater than that of Europe.   At the heart of Ekraht is the Akrean- a massive supervolcano at the heart of a volcanic mountain range. These Akrean mountains average at 15,000 feet above sea level and cover over 470,000 square miles of land (around the size of England). These mountains, infested with massive numbers of Dragomanders, are choking with poisonous smog. While largely uninhabited, rumors exist of secret tribes of strange sorcerers who somehow live in this toxic wasteland   The massive Northern coastline is a whopping 3032 miles of subtropical forest replenished regularly by volcanic ash. In the west, this forest pushes right up to the wall of poison smog in the center of the continent and curls around into massive temperate forests on the Western half. In the East, forested coasts fade into arid interior, with a few notable lakes and forests marking the landscape. In the South, massive empty steppe and grassland border smog-touched desert. As one creeps South, the temperature sharply drops as the humidity again rises. Cold temperate forests marked by seasonal freezing rainstorms dominate the long journey Southward to the antarctic.   Northwest of all of this is the fertile land of Makal. Mountainous and patchy, Makal is a mixture of monsoon jungle, subtropical forest, plains, and desert.
