Edler

Edlers are the lowest tier of nobility in Northern Stildane, who extremely small parcels of land or no lands at all. Edlers frequently act as minor landlords in villages and towns, or work as court or military officers.   Edlers have noble privileges, but rely entirely on either business or patronage to survive. Those who are too business-oriented are deemed to be aspiring Burghers (a symptom of a greedy and dishonorable noble) and patronage can be very fragile as a way to live. Edlers must walk a very careful line to maintain their status generationally; a friendless, landless, and impoverished Edler house will quickly be stripped of their title.   Some Edlers are low-ranking members of knightly orders, some are courtiers tied to a powerful patron, and some are rural elites in the shape of lesser Ritters. Increadingly, Edlers have been able to maintain their positions by purchasing land in towns and seeking higher education to better compete for a patron's office - they act as lawyers, doctors, lesser landlords, and scholars outside of the Uvaran Priesthood. These urban gentry intermarry with the Burgher class and generally face the social consequences of "marrying down", but they at least have a sustainable niche.
