Cuttlefolk

Cuttlefolk appear as massive cuttlefish with bodies 3 feet across ending in short, articulate tentacles. Smaller and squatter than other cephalopoid races, Cuttlefolk are the hardy, simple folk of the open ocean. While less imposing than their fellows, they are far hardier and better suited to survival in all varieties of ocean- reef, shelf, even open ocean. They blend in wherever they go (quite literally), surviving and thriving in small family groups around the world. They are also the mimes of the sea- unable to vocalize at all, cuttlefolk must use music, changes in coloration, sign language, and pantomime to communicate.   As Player Characters, Cuttlefolk have the following statistics:
  • +2 Wis, +1 Con
  • Gain Proficiency in Performance
  • As an action once per short rest, can create a musical instrument from nearby ocean debris as a spell-like effect
  • Cannot speak - proficient in sign language of every language they can understand
  • Can alter their coloration at will
  • Camouflage: Add their Wisdom modifier as well as their Dexterity modifier to Stealth checks to hide when not moving
Cuttlefolk are one of the four sentient aquatic races, along with: Octopeople , Squiddles, and Blessed Sharks Like all aquatic species, The Masked One is their creator and patron

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Cuttlefolk are unique in that they only have one or two spawn at a time, which they carry within their bodies for several weeks. Cuttlefolk infants average 10 inches long and cling to their parent's backs for around a month before reaching a size where it is no longer viable.

Growth Rate & Stages

Cuttlefolk, like the other aquatic races live comparatively short lives, usually 25-50 years. Their childhoods, however, are extremely brief- their brains develop quickly, and they master communication and movement within weeks to months of hatching.

Ecology and Habitats

Cuttlefolk nomads can be found everywhere; some migrate seasonally, others annually. Some of these tribes inhabit corners of the ocean other life would consider uninhabitable- the warrior bards of the arctic and antarctic seas are famous in their fierceness. Some are even said to migrate downwards for times, into the black depths.    Other cuttlefolk prefer to spend their days in squiddle villages or octoperson cities.
