Legion's Hollow

Legion's Hollow is a relatively new outpost on the Borderlands of the Silver Marches and the Anauroch Plain, established under a joint charter between the Lords' Alliance and Everlund. A small frontier community has grown up on the secure side of the protected gap along a ford of the Breggan River. Everyone is very aware that they are on the edge of civilization. Some like it that way.

Government

Olin Ivarsen, the Captain of the Watch, is the sole authority. What he says goes, though he does tend to listen to Olma Margas and the representative from the Church of Lathander. With the new posting of Rhenna Oakenhome to the church here, Ivarsen is not certain how to take her. She seems so young. He also finds himself tending towards awkward flirtation instead of serious consideration when he is around her.   Ivarsen's second in command is the Master of Horse, Riolen Da'lanthan, who is in charge of the garrison stables and scouts. They have their own stronghold in the plain above the settlement. This building was designed as a secondary secure point for those who cannot fit in the keep. Right now the population is small enough that this is not necessary but Ivarsen expects the town to continue to grow. So far he has not been proven right.   Ivarsen likes to have his hands on everything, running both the garrison, the engineers and the town. Orsk Gristlebone chaffs under his supervision, feeling that he is the best one to make decisions on building the fortifications. He feels that having to always hash everything out with Ivarsen wastes too much time. "There are better things I could be doing with my time than always gagging about." Olma doesn't mind too much since Ivarsen has a habit of coming to her instead of always calling her up the hill. He likes to get out among the townsfolk and see for himself how things are going. When he is telling her what to do, she sees this as an opportunity to use her sly manipulation to redirect him instead. Many are starting to become aware of the influence she wields. And since Rhenna Oakenhome has joined the community, he visits more frequently. Even though his style ruffles some feathers, it has proven fairly effective so far.

Defences

Legion's Keep

A small keep has been completed as the main line of defense.

Gristlebone's Wall

This defense is only partially completed. The dwarven engineers under Orsk Gristlebone are working hard to move this project along.

The Scouts' Stronghold

Built along with the garrison's stables, this two-story stone building with a parapet around its top is meant as a fallback position and secondary defense for the citizens of Legion's Hollow.

Industry & Trade

Many of Legion's Hollow are involved in farming, fishing, hunting, trapping, etc. to make ends meet. Little of this could be considered industry because few produce at a level to have surplus to sell. What little extra there is goes to Olma Margas which she purchases for credit with items from the shop.   The discovery of the mithral mine is possible the first foray into producing income for the settlement. Though it would technically be under the charter for the Lords' Alliance and Everlund, Orsk Gristlebone wants to claim it for the nearby dwarven communities. This shift would be a hard thing to sell.   Legion's Hollow is far from self-sufficient. It requires far more resources than it produces at this point. The community's charter stipulates support for 2 additional years, but by the end of 5 years, they expect Legion's Hollow to be self-supporting and producing an income.   A relatively new journeyman potter has arrived in the settlement to assess the area's potential for clay and other components of ceramic production. He is hopeful from what he has seen so far, but most of his attention so far has been on getting his shelter and garden establishes. Soon he hopes to start producing ceramics.   A family of sheep farmers has relocated to Legion's Hollow with their herd. The grassy slopes of the area tend better to their flock than to horses. They expect to do well here eventually.

Infrastructure

The garrison has built a keep and a stronghold near the garrison stables. The current big project (in process) is to build a wall across the mountainous gap. Inhabitants have built a small number of farms and shops. A couple of wells have been dug. Viren Trog's smithy is quite established, but larger infrastructure such as additional smithies and mills are beginning to take shape.     The Dawn's Rest is one of the few buildings in the settlement of Legion's Hollow that could hold more than a couple people at any one time. It is the new chapel to Lathander, run by the priest Rhenna Oakenhome. Many like to observe the morning sunrise from its patio. Rhenna performs a quick blessing on all who attend. Few use the sanctuary although it would be available for weddings or funerals.   Another prominent local figure is Olma Margas. She runs the local mercantile and pretty much the only tavern in town with her three sons, Bren Margas, Ferg Margas and Maccus Margas. Once each month, they go to Everlund to sell furs and produce and to bring back new supplies for the community.   One can also meet Orsk Gristlebone around the settlement. He is in charge of the dwarven crew of engineers who are building the fortifications of the outpost and have also recently discovered the nearby mithral mine. Most evenings, he and his crew hang out at Olma's Mercantile. She makes sure to always stock some good dwarven brew to keep them happy. Orsk appreciates her consideration, although, few would recognize it.   Viren Trog, the blacksmith, uses every opportunity to pester Orsk Gristlebone to build a bridge across the ford. Orsk promises to get to it, but he recognizes that his primary responsibility is to the garrison's fortifications.

Assets

  • Breggan River for fishing and clay gathering
  • Grassy slopes for sheep and horse farming
  • Thick forests for lumber and hunting/trapping for furs (which Olma Margas is happy to buy)
  • The relatively new Mithral Mine. No one knows yet how this will pan out and what impact it will have on the community. Orsk Gristlebone has already called for more dwarves from nearby communities even though Olin Ivarsen wants to keep this discovery hidden until he can get more guidance from the Lords' Alliance.

Guilds and Factions

Although there are few representatives of any established guilds or other groups, wherever people gather there will be cliques and factions. Not everyone follows the same agenda.
  • The Garrison is the primary group in the area. Not only do they seek to construct and man the fortifications, they also bear the most pressure from Everlund and the Lords' Alliance to make the settlement a success. As such, their agenda includes mapping nearby areas to ascertain valuable resources and pacify dangers as well as recruiting additional skilled labor to the settlement.
  • Riolen's Scouts, while techincally under Olin Ivarsen's command, are quite independent. Riolen feels that he should be Captain of the Watch and often works to undermine Olin in hidden ways.
  • Gristlebone's Engineers work for the garrison, but they also have their own agenda. Orsk Gristlebone wants to see the Lords' Alliance fail due to perceived failures of the group to support dwarven communities during the last orc wars. He hints that Legion's Hollow should break its charter and turn to the dwarves for support, especially that the mithral mine has been found. He believes that mithral should only be mined by dwarves.
  • Olma Margas and most of the citizens of the settlement support the garrison since they look to it for protection; however, Olma is not afraid to try to influence Olin either directly or subtly.
  • Viren Trog openly derides the garrison, upset about reductions in their subsidies and rates of pay. He feels that the settlement needs a mayor and that he would be the best candidate for the job. His ideas are gaining support.

Tourism

Nearby locations:
  • Presper's Grove was once a serene valley hidden among the Nether Mountains about a day's journey away. A recent dark disease has defiled its beauty.
  • Bone Circle is on orc burial site about three days' journey into the Anauroch Plain. It contains the underground complex to the Gate of Infinity.

Geography

Legion's Hollow is located in a narrow gap in the Nether Mountains, being one of the few places where one could cross from the Anauroch Plain into the Silver Marches. As such, it is seen as strategically vital for the security of civilized lands in the area.

Natural Resources

Although largely undeveloped, there are a wealth of natural resources in the area. Water is plentiful, promoting thick forests and fertile fields. Farms could be prosperous on both sides of the gap, although that suitability quickly dwindles as one progresses into the Anauroch Plain. Settlers would also fear nighttime raids from roving bands of goblins and orcs. The garrison has pacifiec much of the surrounding area within the gap (at least 5 miles). The mountains also appear to be rich in minerals and other deposits. Orsk's dwarves have recently found an old mithril mine and are currently working to get it up and running again.
