Free City Arena

Once envisioned as a grand civic venue, the Free City Arena instead found its true calling as a battleground for academic rivalries and theatrical spectacles. While its collegiate contests and mock battles draw fervent crowds, the arena’s quirky history, including its faded pink hue, ensures it remains one of Greyhawk’s most storied landmarks.

Originally a collaborative effort between Grey College and Lord Mayor Zagig, the Free City Arena was intended as a venue for grand spectacles and civic celebrations. However, the residents of Greyhawk—never short on entertainment—proved less than enthusiastic about its intended use. With a capacity of only 18,000, many of the city's citizens found themselves excluded from major events.

Yet, where it faltered as a public attraction, the arena thrived as a hub of collegiate competition. Students from Grey College, the Bardschool , the University of the Flanaess , and numerous smaller fraternities gather here for contests of skill, strength, and wit. The arena grounds serve as a neutral battleground, where rivalries unfold in a series of games, mock battles, and athletic trials.

Despite its primary use for academic rivalries, the city still employs the arena for grand celebrations and civic occasions. Illusionist performances, held once or twice a year, remain particularly popular, while traveling circuses and festival pageants transform Clerkburg into a bustling center of activity, especially during Midsummer. The City Watch also uses the arena for military drills, with biannual public mock battles drawing large crowds.

The arena itself—once a gleaming white coliseum of limestone—has undergone some unintentional changes. Nearly twenty years ago, a particularly audacious prank by the Bardschool students left the structure painted in a striking shade of pink. Though time and weather have mostly eroded the color, streaks of pink can still be seen in the limestone, and under the right light, the entire structure takes on a rosy hue.

The arena floor, typically covered in hard-packed sand, is remarkably versatile. With the aid of powerful priests, it has been transformed into a lush green field or even flooded with water, allowing for mock naval battles and rowing competitions. Below the tiered seating, a labyrinthine undercroft houses dressing rooms, animal pens, storage halls, and the short skiffs used in the famed "Sea Wars" contests.

The Grand Box of the Lord Mayor , positioned above the western gate, offers luxurious seating for 100 elite guests. During academic competitions, this space is reserved for the faculty and student leaders of the previous year's champions. The arena wall, standing 15 feet high on the sides and 20 feet at each end, ensures that spectators—particularly those in the front row—must take care not to lean too far forward, lest they tumble into the arena itself.

Throughout the year, the arena hosts a weekly event, save for the coldest months of winter. Most gatherings remain small, drawing under 1,000 spectators. However, once a month, a major competition or civic celebration sees the arena filled to capacity, with Clerkburg teeming with energy as former students return and high-ranking nobles arrive in ornate carriages to witness the spectacle.
