Elven Heartlands
The Elven Heartlands encompass the sea elf settlements off the west coast through the sparse forests of the wood elves all the way to the defended mountain ranges and badlands of the sand elves. While they are not overtly hostile to their neighbors and often engage with them both culturally and in trade, the elves allow few intrusions into their heartlands by outsiders. The elven government is a magocracy, ruled by a council of archmagi focused on each of the seven schools of magic. All elves except desert elves are supposedly held as equal opportunity advancers politically in elven society, but wood elves represent a disproportionate majority of them due to their growing up at the elven center of government. The archmages are collectively known as the High Conclave and their current council chair is the Abjuration Archmage. Each archmage keeps a personal honor guard of 3 bladesingers. These bladesingers are known as the Veilguard due to their uniform featuring face coverings roughly visually similar to a fencer’s mask. To be one is a high honor, and they are expected to fight to the death in the line of duty. The High Conclave appoints ministers to manage day-to-day elven bureaucracy but all major decisions are made by their vote in the elven capital of Verdrid. Recently, there has been a political push for druids, sorcerers, and other spellcasters to be allowed to compete for candidacy for the High Conclave.
