Personal history
Second born of Huichi and Syla, and eldest of their daughters, Bulan's life has been one of burden, responsibility, and tragedy.
When her non-biological father became aware that Mok Tun and his sisters were part god, he intended to put them to use in his ambitions as a leader and then conquerer. While it was too late for Mok Tun, Huichi commanded her eldest daughter, Bulan, still a young girl, to take her younger sisters and flee and hide with the help of Isoko so as to avoid becoming tools as well, or worse - to be discovered by Zun.
While Isoko loved them dearly, she was not the most focused nor naturally inclined to stability. She dragged the young girls across the world, thinking they would enjoy adventure, when truly they just missed their mothers and brother and even their father, and a decade went by without hearing of or from any of them.
It was in Bulan's late teens that Isoko decided it would be best for them to establish a home - one without her - and so she left them with a trusted follower and told them she would find what she could of their mother and brother and return as soon as she did.
Time passed with no word, and the girls grew and worked and seemed to begin to come to acceptance with being orphans, though they were loved and cared for by their adopted family, but that could not last either.
Bulan, as the eldest, began to manifest her "gifts" first. She never seemed surprised by them, nor caught off guard, and almost came into them naturally. She had always known she was different from others, she knew who and what her mother was. When she began to be able to see the light of life leaving the bodies of the dead, she accepted it for what it was right away. But her affinity with sitting in graveyards and watching souls seep out of the ground and be drawn to the Moon Gate, and her tendency to stop and hold dying or dead animals and encourage them along, quickly lead to being labeled an outcast amongst the people of their small village.
Being an oddity did not concern her, however, as she was more inclined to be alone as it were. But her sister, Eris, had blossomed into a beautiful maiden, and that sister loved the attention. She loved to tease the boys and men and lead them into tricks and traps, rousing anger from many a local, to which she'd pout innocently and claim all of them were just upset that she was already more clever and intelligent than any of them. They could not argue, but they did not like it, and she garnered enough resentment that it was only a matter of time before she stepped to far. One of tricks eventually lead to a young man falling and breaking his neck. While Eris was not terribly upset about it and blamed it on the boy's own stupidity, gullibility, and faulty footing, she knew it would not lead to anything good to have any of that come to light. She went to Bulan and told her what she'd done. Bulan asked to be taken to the body.
When she came upon it, she saw the light streaming from the boy, and she attempted a thing she never had before -- she reached out and she grabbed it, winding it around her fingers until she had a grip, and then she pulled it back from its attempt to travel to the Moon Gate and she stuffed it into the boy's mouth. She felt it attempt to fight its way past her palms, and she held her hand there, fascinated by what she was doing. She heard the bones in his neck realign, and then all at once his eyes shot open and he gasped, breathing in life again.
But he did not look well. He did not look right at all.
There was an emptiness in his eyes, a deep sorrow and longing and confusion, and his skin looked pallid and sickly. He scrambled to his feet and fled as best and quickly as he could, leaving the girls behind. Eris burst into laughter and grabbed Bulan by the shoulders and shook her while singing her praises. Bulan watched worriedly after the boy.
When the sisters were home, their youngest sibling (then still only a single mind/body, her true name lost and never spoken by her elder sisters, but who we now know as Elpis and Moros) ran to them and warned that their adopted parents had been badly beaten and accused of harboring monsters. Without a beat or looking back, Bulan took her sisters by the hand and marched them away from that village.
From there: wandering, growing power, Eris runs offs, the split of Elpis and Moros, all the while Nakhasi Empire grows, eventually brother finds her and wants to die and she helps, she goes further into reclusiveness, Old Zun finds her and talks with her explains that she's special what she can do and teaches her a little more, says he is tired and apologizes for the harm he caused, tells her her mother is still alive but not sure where, and that he must find ways to create checks and balances to make up for the damage he has caused (the Drinkers, giving his power to a possible psychopath, but he doesn't tell her these are his plans), her sisters come and find her, Eris has a plan to help some of the Nakhasi that came to her while the Empire is crumbling, but she needs the help of her sisters, Bulan watches as Eris succeeds but goes mad, but they help save the Nakhasi of Kyokuri and are offered protection and gratitude, that is where they hide until Zun himself comes marching in looking for Bulan, Bulan can tell he's not the original Zun and that he's fuckin nuts, she agrees to go with him to save her sisters and the Kyokuri, and that's where she is now.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Bulan wishes to return to her duties as guardian of the dead, helping souls transition from this and return to the giver through the moon gate. Currently, she is essentially imprisoned by Zun, forced to maintain and replenish the ranks of The Empty to help maintain Aurorum's hold and hopefully increase it, though his true intent is to use her to find a way to make himself truly immortal.
Bulan wishes only to let The Empty be free, and while she knows they are unnatural things, she loves them as if they were her own children and wishes to end their suffering.
