Dismas

One of the most Northern continents of Gidoire that is still habitable by the common folk.

Geography

The majority of Dismas is covered in mountains and glaciers. Volcanic activity is rare, but a major eruption tends to happen once every human generation.

Ecosystem

Even before the Everwinter, the harsh winters would require the common people to struggle for survival.

Hot springs are mapped and protected much like an oasis would be in a desert.

Travel is often done by dogsleds or axe beaks.

Climate

A land of short mild summers and harsh winters, it is a difficult place to survive.   Hot springs are used to stay warm and even provide places for winter farming of some vegetables.

Natural Resources

Iron deposits are found throughout the lands, and obsidian can be found with ease.

Rare veins of yellow iron can be found. They appear to have yellowgemstones mixed into the ore.  Its heat resistance has made it difficult to work with, and is typically ignored.

History

The Empty Lands     Scholars believed the lands of Dismas are unique in that there are no native intelligent species, and the three gods of the lands existed without worship for centuries before the arrival of mortal souls.       Earliest oral history of the Harka       The barbaric Harka arrived, led by four princesses, from a land destroyed by war.   They found Dismas empty of peoples, or so they thought, for they were soon attacked by savage dwarves. The dwarves refused all offers of peace, and would only surrender by death.       The Harka eventually broke into four tribes and living in a regular contest with each other as well as the land.       The Arrival of the Uthor       When explorers of the country of Uthor found Dismas, they immediately saw an opportunity to expand and claim new land. Having only seen the lands in the summer, they were not prepared for the harsh winters. Conflict with the Harka led to further instability. Multiple attempts were made over decades to settle the land, but they eventually gave up and made it a place to send their less desirables.       With that, Dismas became a destination for the dislocated and those looking for a fresh start.       Yet, no official nation was born—the people of Dismas had local governments and tribes, but the struggles of the land led to little time for politics with other countries.       The Orphaned War       The war that led to the death of the gods didn't directly touch Dismas's shores.       The three gods of Dismas, never widely worshipped, disappear to fight. They were never heard from again.       With the end of the war, as the oceans became deadly to travel—Dismas became cut off from the world. It was a tough time that created tight bonds for the different races and peoples.       The New Divinity       When the new gods came to the world, their apostles visited Dismas and spread their religion.   There were met with suspicion, but their arrival also tamed the wild ocean—allowing Dismas to connect with the world once more.       A time of great prosperity arrived.       The Orcs       The peoples of Dismas were sent into disarray when a fleet of ships arrived off their coast. Orcs from around the world had arrived, but under a banner of peace. Through tense talks, they orcs made clear they had turned their back on their dead gods' ways, and sought only peaceful coexistence. Their plan to inhabit the dangerous mountains avoided much conflict.       Vetur       The frozen isle of Vetur, Musteri, off the coast of the city of Kalmar exploded with a pillar of blue light.       The god of winter was thought long dead and the island regarded as an accursed place best left alone.       The god announced her return at midnight by taking to the sky on its roc, flying in circles--- creating an endless night and winter to spread across all of Dismas.     Brave heroes sailed to the isle, but none ever returned.     Clerics of the New Divinity sailed to the isle, but none ever returned.     Representatives of the peoples sailed to the isle, but none ever returned.     The city of Kalmar mustered an army, and sailed to the isle. None returned.   But Vetur summoned armies of ice and cold to assault the city. Making it a silent city of ice and death.     Soon after, robed emissaries, calling themselves the Grýla, arrived in the towns of the Parliament and the Harka tribes--- demanding sacrifices to Vetur, or those locations would suffer a similar fate to Kalmar. With those words, the Grýla town down churches to the New Divinity and burned alive their priests and clerics.     Any attempting to escape Dismas found their ships crushed by ice. Any arriving on Dismas became prisoners.     It has been two years. Life has been growing increasingly harsh for the peoples of Dismas.   They watch their children grow hungrier and colder as every midnight is marked by Vetur circling Dismas once more.

These times are called the Everwinter.
