Parivaar Collection Organization in Ghosts of Saltmarsh | World Anvil

Parivaar Collection

The Parivaar Collection is the largest organized criminal society in Keoland. As a loose association, the parivarr are bound together through the Articles of Agreement. Each parivaar controls an ilaaka and is lead by a boss, known as a Pujan, who controls everything. The level of political and military corruption in Keoland have historically allowed for the incorporation of many government officials, though that practice has been severely limited since the corruption crackdown lead by King Scotti.

History

Organized crime has always existed in some form, but it wasn't until after the Destruction of the Second Age and the emergence of a band of refugee camp leaders that the foundations for the modern thieves guild appeared. Desperate to provide food and shelter for their families, the parvis frequently stole from more supported, wealthier settlements. Several folk stories paint these early leaders as heroes.   As economic and civic structures strengthened during the subsequent reconstruction, the strength and influence of the thieves guild remained limited for several generations. The economic damage caused by the Great War created numerous shortages and delays in production and international trade.   Due to its ability to avoid international and military checkpoints, the thieves guild, now known as the Parivaar Collection, became a popular and more reliable alternative for basic and luxury items. As the group gained traction and notoriety, a loose code of conduct, known as the Articles of Agreement, was established. Many national leaders have attempted to dismantle the thieves guild but were unsuccessful.

Famous Conflicts

While the parivaars have a history of violent rivalries, most moments of tension have been resolved internally. The First Sangraam was a notable exception. Pujan Mereg Krentz bribed lesser pujan to swear loyalty to him, blackmailed or bribed working members of other pujan, and secretly recruited members from local town guard families. By manipulating the Articles of Agreement, Krentz began to dominate the Parivaar Collection, using his power to replace the pujan of lesser parivaars with hand-picked proxies.   Seeing her own parivaar's power diminishing, pujan Obaya Uday ordered her Sahaayak to assassinate Krentz. The attempt was ultimately unsuccessful, but the poisons left permanent damage to the left side of his body. His facial nerves were so impaired that his smile only reached the right side of his face, and the leg had a prominent limp.   Krentz publicly banished Uday, sparking outright conflict between the different parivaar factions. Hundreds of parivaar members and their relatives were murdered. Despite the extensive resources at Krentz's disposal, Uday's parivaar alliances emerged victorious.

Tattoos

Thieves guild members can easily be identified by a tattooed band on their upper left arm. The tattoo starts as a simple repeating triangular pattern with more elaborate bands representing rank and status as the members progress through the guild. Members of the guild that accomplished particularly impressive feats would earn distinctive tattoo markings on different parts of their body.
