Gitoxoi (/gi:toʃoi/)

Υιτοʃοι

Descendants, often children, of unions between Aeillan humans, and Dotharan, or more rarely, Feloran Elves and Half-Elves, the Gitoxoi are a small, but important Aeillan ethnic group in southern Aeilla. They are largely the product of affairs, or rarely, marriages between visiting traders and locals, and are often born of the middle classes. They, as a result of their class, tend to be better educated than most other Aeillan ethnics, and often take up skilled trades, most often in maritime fields. Often the children of merchants, Gitoxoi have a reputation, at least in the maritime states as exceptional sailors, and when pressed into wartime service, marines. There are currently no Gitoxoi states in existence, though Gitoxoi are often part of powerful guilds such as the Artenesian Shipwright's Guild, the Nikean Navigator's Guild, and the Korentine Salvage Guild, as well as possessing some representation in the Senates of Nikea and Artenos.   Gitoxoi hold a unique position in Aeillan society, as in most states they are outright shunned as being degenerate halfbreeds, or worse, as ideal targets for enslavement. Indeed, Gitoxoi are the largest single group of peoples sought out for enslavement to be joined into the Auxilia Baillistarii, armed retainers of many nobles. In such societies half-elven Gitoxoi are seen more as elves, then as men, and given the Aeillan civilization's history with Elves, this is often seen as a bad thing. In societies where they are welcomed however, they tend to be highly sought after for their skills honed over their considerably longer lifespans. Indeed, a few Gitoxoi have established successful mercantile companies of their own, other, less scrupulous Gitoxoi have become dreaded pirates plying the waters between Aeilla and Leandris.   In most cases, Gitoxoi are culturally assimilated into the broader Aeillan culture, particularly in cases where they are free to live their lives. Most are Pandroi, though they often have a number of household gods with remarkable similar to Feloran spiritual beings, and almost all Gitoxi speak the Aeillan language, with naming conventions usually following Ilosi, or more rarely, along Tyroi lines, with almost no Gitoxoi being of Spartharoi stock. Gitoxoi have a few customs they keep to themselves, a few unique holidays, and some rites of passage primarily, that pertain to the unique experience of the mixed-race and partially Feloran Gitoxi peoples. In the arts, and in fashion, they represent a mix of Aeillan, and Dotharan cultural influences.   Gitoxoi peoples generally have roughly analagous beauty standards when compared to Aeillans, generally most closely resembling the Ilosi model with light to medium skin tones, approaching the lightest olive tones, and dark hair and eyes. They tend to be of a lighter build than human Aeillans and appear more slender, and, according to some, more graceful in their appearance, though some do become quite bulky through training. Gitoxoi are often seen as otherworldly by some particularly superstious Aeillans, though those with more experience with them do not share these superstitions.
