The Curse

Land of Ivangar - 2538AC

The Night of Blood was a dark stain on Talorean history, a time they do not wish to admit exists and many of the other tribes are unaware of this time, some the elites in the other lands are aware of what occurred, mostly, but they do not have all the information. Slowly over the centuries it became known as simply The Curse.   Only those with the intent of malicious vindictiveness would ever want to use this curse on another Saharian, to wish a lifelong curse on someone is the epitome of evil and sadly, some still wished to use this mysterious curse.

The Black Book of Hazel Buric

Talorean Hazel Buric in 2538AC chose to remain outside the massive Guild system that Taloreans had created for all their various items they crafted and traded with the other tribes across Genivan, he came from a middle class family. It was almost compulsory to join the Wisdom’s Guild, a guild centered around mathematics and sciences as Hazels having the rare magical ability of Supreme Intelligence were highly sought after but because Buric had wealthy and noble connections, he was able to do deny the compulsory enlistment.   Buric sought answers to The Night of Blood, it was rumored that one of his family members had been turned into one of these beasts, never confirmed fully in Talorean history but the rumor never died and became tied with Hazel Buric’s history.   He wanted to understand who had done this, why and if there was a way to reverse the curse. After The Night of Blood, the beasts had been corralled and pushed strategically towards Balerno a town in the southeast part of the land of Ivangar and through Balerno Pass to the southlands known as the Whispering Woods to the west and Fen Woods to the east. Taloreans did not patrol that area, their main military force patrolled the borders of their land and their towns; so, the beasts were left alone and began to multiply.   The name Lycan was first coined by Hazel Buric, they were like humans but not; Ly-can. That was his reasoning which is recorded as such for why he named these beasts. They now had a name but there was more he would find, Buric wanted to find the source of The Curse.
All the lands of Genivan and its people, no one could smelt metal, extract elements out of rocks like minerals or the organic compounds out of plants or any other organic substance, only Taloreans with their innate Earth Magic could do such things and semi-rare among their society was a magic known as Enchantment, those who had this magic were known as Amber Sirens.   They could combine inorganic and organic materials into elixirs, potions and tinctures. Amber Sirens were highly sought after by the Enchanters Guild as some of the potions made could be reproduced by those without the magic of Enchantment, most required an Amber Siren. The Enchanters Guild was never without an Amber Siren somewhere in their ranks as 20% of Taloreans had this ability throughout the land of Ivangar and Hazel Buric had uncovered evidence that it may have been an Amber Siren who had developed this curse.   Tinctures are incredibly powerful, potent and have a high risk of causing more damage than good if produced poorly, if the Amber Siren misunderstood the amount of elements needed in the tincture. Plagues seemingly to come from nowhere that rocked Talorean society over the past two millennia, Buric had discovered originated from a bad tincture made by accident by Amber Sirens. Diadems and Elders were quickly demanded from the Gideans in their deep ocean land of Vastor and paid huge sums to come quickly to cure the plague as no other tribe had the magical ability to heal.   This had happened many times Buric had discovered and he wrote it down into a compendium that would later be called The Black Book of Hazel Buric. Only Taloreans know the contents of this book, many Azurians are aware of it’s existence but have never been able to obtain a copy much to their chagrin. Gideans also know the book may exist and wish a copy themselves as they are Genivan’s healers and much effort has been put in by the Taloreans to keep the Gideans ignorant on the true source of some of their most brutal and wide spreading plagues, sickness and of course; the damning rumor the Lycan curse originates in the land of Ivangar.   Buric was fundamental in discovering the misuse of Amber Sirens talent and the need to order reform in the Enchanters Guild to make sure an ‘accident’ never occurred again. Buric believes the curse was produced as the result of a tincture intended to cause intense harm psychologically but since nothing had ever been produced in this manner before… He concluded that the Amber Siren (or Amber Sirens, he was never sure if this was a group effort or that of a single individual) had no understanding of the outcome and what it would actually do.
He was also instrumental in the need to stop calling them beasts, one of his main reasons for giving the ‘beasts’ a name was to stop dehumanizing them, though they did not look human, they had been human, and Buric hoped that one day someone would find a cure.   When Buric had become much aged, he had revealed so much in his long life but the one failure he had was finding a cure; one of the reasons the rumor which became linked to his legend about close family member:
“I have revealed the malpractice of Amber Sirens, the malintent of some of their creations, catalogued the atrocities and made them public for all Taloreans, our future depends on knowledge. To my ever lasting shame, a cure was not found”Buric, Hazel – 2608AC
Many Taloreans believe he wished to cure a family member cursed, this notion is emphasized by some of his life’s work changing the name of the beasts to Lycan, trying to understand them from a cultural perspective and never speaking of them as just animals that needed to be hunted down and eradicated.

Fools

On occasion, young brazen fools would form a Lycan hunting party and go into known area’s where Lycan were known to live, where they lived precisely no one knew but the young men would go with much jubilance; hoping to return to be rewarded for their bravery and eradication of the hated beasts. Only to be mocked when they came back, most of their company dead, missing and the rest with severe injuries. It seems the young will never learn, as this still occurs to the present day, every generation or so.

Honor & Sorrow

Those families who had the horror of the curse placed upon a family member honored Hazel Buric for generations to come, some had even tried to take up his mantel to find a cure, to find peace with the Lycans or to try anything to redeem the loved one they had lost. All to no avail, the Lycan loathed ALL Saharians. By the third millennium all major efforts at peace were abandoned. If the Lycan attacked, they would be killed if the Saharians could catch them and if they did not, there was far too much to worry about within their own borders of their lands to hunt them down.
