Bleak Gardens

Bleak Gardens
Bleak Gardens is the largest settlement in Kalope, a state within the Drembari Isles.
Bleak Gardens is the largest settlement in Kalope, located on an island on the far western edge of the state. It borders The Vast and Mimok's Trees, a dense temperate forest.

Government

Bleak Gardens is run by a "Cooper's Council" of prominent businessfolk, appointed to the position by a general election. Waterspeaker Emon oversees Kalope business when he is in residence.

Defences

In addition to the walls, there are two towers and a robust gatehouse, all designed to keep the various dangers of the Trees at bay.

Industry & Trade

The Pale Oak found in Mimok's Trees makes excellent barrel staves, which are required for barrels, which, in turn, are required for a sea journey of any length. As such, the primary industry in Bleak Gardens is forestry and cooperage, with several small concerns competing for trade on the island.   Fishing is also present. The Bifurcated Trout--a two headed fish--is especially sought after. Many traditional Bari healing remedies utilize its liver.

Infrastructure

The town boasts a study wall fashioned from treated Pale Oak lumber. There's also a fully functioning dock with space for four bigger ships at any one time. The shipyard is renowned for its quick turnaround time and its quality repairs.   There are current efforts to make the "road" leading into Mimok's Trees more secure.

Guilds and Factions

Although not "officially" present in the town, Brightwater Watch--a mercenary guild come political organization--maintains an interest in the affairs of Bleak Gardens.

History

Bleak Gardens was founded soon after Kalope itself. Local stories say that the first settlers came ashore because the sub-quality wood used to fashion their freshwater barrels had begun to rot. Discovering a trove of Pale Oak, they decided to stay and Bleak Gardens was born.   These settlers, however, were not the first inhabitants. Historians have been pulling strange artifacts from the coast and the Trees for centuries. Study is still underway to discover what happened to these initial inhabitants.

Architecture

Pale Oak features prominently in all Bleak Gardens buildings. It is a versatile building material.

Geography

While there is obviously an abundance of saltwater, freshwater presents more of a concern, as the island has no river from which to source it. Luckily, there are several different ways of distilling water from The Vast, all of which involve a steady supply of fuel. Pale Oak, again, comes in handy here.
