Vernica
Vernica is one of the twin capitals of the Republic. It is situated not but two miles away from Solden with only a strait between the two. The cities used to be connected by a massive arch with a portal sitting on the center in which colonists poured from and trade flowed through. Vernica is the most populated city in the entirety of the Republic and contains the largest military university in the Republic as well as one of the two senate houses.
Demographics
Vernica is mostly populated by humans, dwarves, elves, and half-elves. There are a large number of military personnel either training or actively serving. Vernica has has the largest population of any city on Gaulren and the largest percent of that population being military personnel of any city barring when Kaivoss is preparing to send an expedition. There are more 'non-core' races living in Vernica due to this fact as the easiest way to gain citizenship is to serve in the legions. Vernica also has the largest percentage of citizens due to that same fact.
Government
Defences
Vernica is surrounded by a massive set of walls. Inside of the city are three forts two near the senate house and one near the outer walls. Vernica is protected by a minimum of six legions manning the walls and forts and also to act as the policing force throughout the city. This number usually sits around ten legions. They also act as the riot force in case there are riots from Stadia Vulpa, which happen fairly frequently. The three forts are where most of the legionnaires are stationed along with several barracks strewn about the city.
The walls are also manned by several artillery battalions from Miana to provide further protection against invasion. The last time Vernica was attacked was during the sundering with no enemies even crossing past the Crelan Spires since the Justicar's Crusades.
Industry & Trade
Vernica is funded by Solden to produce legions for the Republic to defend its borders. Their largest export is legionnaires to the provinces, but they do have a significant number of large scale blacksmith to equip troops with mass produced weapons and armor when the Dwarven imports are not enough to equip the entirety of their legions.
Vernica also imports an enormous amount of food from Luclana and Plania in order to feed the population. The senate usually has a free grain dole in effect to feed the citizens as a large number of them are poor and would otherwise cause a significant number of problems for the city.
Infrastructure
The Infrastructure of Vernica is top notch. The main streets responsible for bringing in the food to feed the city are very well maintained. They also have an extensive network of water and sewage systems to keep the city supplied with fresh water and ensure the streets are not covered in piss and feces.
Vernica also has one of the two Senate houses where senate meetings are held and the Vernican Center of the Legions a center for both organizing legion movements and training future legates, centurions, and other military officers especially for logistics. The Vernican Center for the Legions works closely with the training camps throughout Vernica.
Vernica also holds Stadia Vulpa, the second largest circus and games center only dwarfed by Stadia Aquila in Solden. Stadia Vulpa is known for its large flat ground in the center that is constantly being changed and reformed to stage elaborate gladiator fights, tournaments, and races of all kind such as chariot and foot.
The Theatrum Tellus is a center for plays and comedies. It is one of the few centers mostly made out of wood, the rest of the city is stone and marble, and is constantly reshaped and reformed to fit different productions. The Theatrum Tellus is known for being one of the few locations in the capital where a consul was killed. Consul Pomponius was assassinated by an Albion freedom fighter after the province became a client state following the Fourth Albion Wars.
Guilds and Factions
The Evocati have a massive presence in the city. They train Imperatum agents as well as the rector locums that are sent to the provinces. They keep an eye on the city to ensure order.
The League of Veterans is an organization of retired legionnaires within the city that fights for their rights. Many of them have already blown through their stipend and were unable to find employment elsewhere and are struggling to make ends meet. They advocate for reforms and have even staged a few protests bringing the city to a standstill.
History
Vernica was established by the Vernicus family after setting foot on the planet of Gaulren from the old world. The Vernicus family became the defacto rulers of the city and eventually formalized their alliance with Solden around two and a half centuries following the first settlers arriving to Gaulren. Vernica has ever since been a major player on the global scene and is one of the twin capitals of the Republic. Vernica was slowly expanded to its massive size that it is today. Following the Sundering there were a large number of abandoned houses throughout the city due to the lack of people throughout the Republic. It took half a millennia for the city to return to its former size. In 2673 F.S. the city expanded in size once again and has stayed at around the population it is at currently since. Vernica has a large number of apartment complexes housing hundreds of people, many of them retired legionnaires. In the last few years there has been an increasing number of people moving out from Vernica to Solden in search of employment.
