Quyata

Quyata occupies the entirety of Che Kycho Quy, including the majority of the Beltway of the Syhychakwa. Their territory is defined by the great river to the north, the Atmax to the east, the Bat Sye to the west, and the edge of the forest to the south. They have controlled this area for almost 500 years, when, at the time of the commune's founding in 702fa, they claimed the forest as their own, negotiating it away from the tribes of the Gueta Ko.

Structure

Each of the six permanent settlements along the rivers has an elected body of leaders. These bodies combine to make the Quyata Assembly, the main decision and law making body of the commune.   The settlements' elected leading bodies consist of:
  • a Mayor - responsible for the overall management of the settlement
  • a Deputy - responsible for maintaining order and discipline within the settlement
  • a Secretary - responsible for the administrative and fiscal duties of the settlement
  • a Provisioner - responsible for the overall movement of goods and resources into and out of the settlement
Each of the 30 forest camps has a Camp Coordinator that is assigned by the Assembly.   In addition to these, each settlement and camp has an assigned Ataso, a sort of shaman-medicine woman. The Ataso of the six permanent settlements are also part of the Assembly.   There are also, often, Papos, assigned to certain projects to coordinate and oversee the work being done.   Other than these roles, there is no hierarchy within the commune.

History

The founders of Quyata were a mix of peoples from all the existing cultures at that time - Bramin, Tayon Ke, and the Gueta Ko. They had three main goals: to return to simpler lives, to rediscover their spiritual connection to Nature, and to live communally as one body. So they each broke from their traditions, left their homelands, and began to settle in small camps in the forest.   At the time, this was territory controlled by the tribes of the Gueta Ko. Although the tribes had been living in the forest for a thousand years, it was always an uneasy relationship for them. They were (and are), at heart, a nomadic plains people, whose souls yearned for vast open skies and the feel of the wind on their skin as they raced across the grasslands on their horses. Most of them were happy to give up the responsibility of having to manage the enormous tangled space of Che Kycho Quy, as well as the responsibility of having to interact with the peoples of Tayon Ke and Bramin along the Beltway. So, in exchange for ongoing "payment" of some important forest exports - mostly medicinal plants - the tribes gave the newly developing commune complete control of everything north of the line where the forest meets the Sakakuisy.   Over the past 1000 years, the original 90 members of Quyata have grown into a population of almost 100,000 people, attracting new members from all over the island and continuing to focus their energies on the three founding principles: simple living, spiritual connection with Nature, and a Oneness of community.

Demography and Population

Quyata has 6 established permanent settlements that are located along the Syhychakwa and the Bat Sye. These are, from east to west:
  1. Gaku
  2. Minta
  3. Iatye (this is where the Assembly meets)
  4. Chius
  5. Minnit
  6. Quin
Each member of the Quyata is assigned to one of these six settlements as a "permanent" residence, therefore each has an official population of around 15,000 inhabitants. In reality, only about 5,000 are there at any given time, as the rest are out working at the camps.   There are 30 forest camps spread throughout Che Kycho Quy and it is from these that the people of the commune do their work of culling trees, milling lumber, and foraging the forest for medicinals and food. Each camp has a rotating population of around 2,000 people at any one time. People from the settlements are assigned to work-shifts at a camp and these rotate every 3 months, so the camps are comprised of people from all of the different settlements, and different people all the time.
