Úxútans

Sanxean: Mrenhúxop /mrɛːnhuksɔːph/
The úxútans1 are the main ethnic group inhabiting the Fúra Mountains in northwestern Emlas, relatives of the Úktans on the Ixmaka Tundra further north, who form a number of tribes spread across the mountains, some semi-nomadic and others sedentary. Invasions in the past have resulted in scattered communities of úxútan descendants living in the northernmost part of the empire of Sanx, south of the Fúra Mountains, though most have adopted the culture of lowlanders to the point that it's hard to distinguish the two at his point.
The Sanxeans consider these lowland úxútans to be more or less 'civilized', while those in the highlands are regarded as barbarians due to their different language, cuisine and relative lack of hierarchy in their societies.

Culture

Apparel

Unlike most people of Fjimrú Forest, úxútans generally don't make their clothes out of dog fur, though imported cloth is sometimes used for ceremonial clothing, instead they use pigskins and other animal hides along with various plant fibers such milkweed and nettles. Geometric designs are popular, often dyed in bright colours.
Long hair is favoured by men and women alike, and head flattening is widely practiced among úxútans.

Art

Architecture

Úxútan homes vary depending on each tribe's lifestyle, ranging from wooden longhouses similar to those on the lowlands, particularly among more sedentary ones, to longhouses covered in reed-mats instead or semi- or fully subterranean structures, the latter which are more favoured by those that move around throughout the year.

Cuisine

Traditional diet of most úxútan tribes is based on camas bulbs, pork, wild game, fish and fish oil, and various wild fruits, berries and vegetables. Boiled or baked camas bulbs are so important that the sanxean name for the úxútans, mrenhúxop, roughly means flower-eaters, as opposed to water oats and millet, and conflicts have occurred among different tribes over the usage and ownership of camas meadows.
