Targarch
Targarch was the title held by the elected ruler-for-life of Ancient Targos; it translates as "Targotian Ruler" or "Ruler of the Targotians".
The last Targarch of Ancient Targos was Kimil Atoria do Targos, who was executed as part of Zendyl Heste do Shaphel's coup leading to the establishment of the Zendylite Empire.
Appointment
The Targarch was elected by the property-owning population of the eponymous capital city, originally. Once Col Shaphel and Col Aylia were established as eastern administrative centers for the growing Targotian nation, their populations began to chafe at the lack of participation in the choice of their ruler. This condition led to the rise in power and influence of the Great Families in the two cities, which in turn brought about a limited amount of change when in the early 7th century ATC, the ruling Targarch allowed a limited participation in the vote for office by those of the other cities who could afford to pay for the right. This was the condition that persisted until the end of the Targarchy and the Ancient Targotian state.
Notable Holders
Laro Sahlien do Targos was the Targarch who approved and funded Zendyl Heste do Shaphel's (still known as Zendyl Hestesi at the time) early expeditions.
Kimil Atoria do Targos was the Targarch that Zendyl the Messenger defeated and executed at the end of his coup, ending the Ancient Targotian state and beginning the Zendylite Empire.
