Kraken's Nest Settlement in Galfin | World Anvil

Kraken's Nest

Kraken's Nest is a bustling village in the Ios province of Pacura, known for its wild and raucous atmosphere. The population is a mix of Pacuran, Vohkin, and Wyndan who all worship Sootha. The village is located in a mild wetland, surrounded by dense vegetation and a maze of waterways. The Governor of this place is a rough and tumble character named Merdock, known for his love of gambling and his silver tongue.
Kraken's Nest is a hub of activity. The streets are filled with peddlers and merchants hawking their wares, and the air is thick with the smell of exotic spices and roasting meat. At the heart of the village is a small but thriving black market, where all manner of forbidden goods and services can be found for the right price.
The settlement rests on the banks of a broad river, and its residents are expert fishers and boat-makers. There is a bustling port where ships come and go, trading in goods from across the land. At night, the village comes alive with music and revelry, as locals and travelers alike gather to drink, dance, and tell stories of their adventures.

This small settlement has a constant layer of mist sprinkling over the swampy bog. Orange light lanterns light the murky setting even in the daylight. The structure are built on wooden platforms to keep the peoples feet dry. The soggy planked wood has a shiny greenish hue from the mold that grows from the mist of the waterfall. Drunkards from the night before are still passed out sleeping on walls. This town is in a constant state of hangover and nothing really opens until noon. It is not in 3 feet of water like the treeline atop the falls, the ground is constantly squishy and moist though. Wood planks make up a sidewalk of this musty, mosquito infested shanty of a town. To the south is a forked river. From one split is the waterfall and the other is filled to overcapacity with cut down logs. This town is built by a milling lodge. A large waterwheel with copper rudders spins day and night to keep the logging mill running. To you outsiders, this looks like it might be a work camp for the mill. Just passed the town was large cylinders built in the water with large two man saws ready to cut up lumber. This island is home to the Sogwood trees, strong trees that thrive in the boggy flood and grow faster than any other tree, at least any that can grow above 20ft.
In the center of town in a marketplace with many foreign sellers trading their wares.
A Fire Elf selling suet from the Firefang Jags. A yergralffe man selling furs from the far wintery north.
A gaijun man selling crocodile skins from the swampy mainland province of Vargen Swamplands A black sun elf from Dynastes selling books.
A mine dwarf who had set up a smithy. A dharan priest who was working on the wounded or alcohol poisoned drunkards from the night before.
A former High Guard knight selling weapons stolen from royal shipments.
A terra elf using his magic to create pottery.
A wood elf selling herbs and leaves. They look to really just be leaves, not magical at all.
A caluan man from the desert selling camel meat and spices.
A pacuran woman making local eats. Curiously she is dropping raw chickens into a pot of tar and then hanging them on a rack. A larger house with two crossed cutlasses emblazoned across the door sat a little further into the trees then the rest of the shanty structures. A large lock requiring an odd shaped key kept this door secure. The chickens are not for sale and are a special order that she wont talk about.

  Magical Factions in Galfin
  The First Spellbook
The Silverstaff Family If you talk to the darksun elf, he has a book called "A Brief History of Magic in Galfin" which has the current affairs of magic. Published a year ago. It reveals that since their charismatic necromancy leader Kronimane died a few years ago, the Triade of the Fallen night, the magical faction has been in a power struggle trying to regain its seat among the magic factions. With the Wizards Guild struggling to grow after a large battle involving an orcish man, a elfish woman and a goblin, that took place in the Capitol of Skygarde, left parts of the city destroyed there is one main faction that has stayed afloat in this trying time for wizards. The the Seekers, a group wishing to horde and lock away all magic has grown in the unfortunate circumstances of the other two factions. Talk about the first magelord. The next chapter is a reminiscent chapter on the first wizard. Ome of the 6 kings of men, Magelord Adonis Oakhand, the Northern King. He was the first person to be able to teach spells to non magic users. Yes, some people have innate magical abilities but Adonis wrote the first spellbook and sent that knowledge out into the world. Leadleaf and Sogwood trees fast growing trees are used for most ships secret supplies are shipped in logs from Ios. Sent everywhere to smuggle contraband. Logs run down river to a saw mill. Town of loggers, protected by the Kraken. The party made its way into town after seeing an inebriated group of townsfolk drunkenly skinny dip on their watch that night. As you made your way into the city you were greeted by a multicultural marketplace with many wares and good from foreign lands. You spent a good time conversing with Borno the Mine Dwarf blacksmith. He was also an aspiring artist who made his own trading cards. You split up as some of you visited the former High Guard soldier Grai Cross selling weapons, one of you went to Sol the Blacksun elf who ran the Arcanian Bookshop and one of you got nowhere with the Yergralffe fur trader because you tried to trade him Borno cards. Merdock the happy go lucky mayor of this settlement greets you. He explains how this town is for the workers at the lumber mill in the river. Also it works as a staging point for planned supply drops out of the swamp. Merdock is bold in saying that he hates Zephyr and Typhon and actively aims to undermine their bullying control. Before you know it, a Zephyrn ambush occurs and Merdock gets stabbed while the other townsfolk are attacked. You helped defend them off with the heroic help of Borno who sadly fell to a raider’s blade. After you dealt with half the invasion the cavalry arrived with the mighty ship The Kraken. It is captained by a grim man named Ivan. All of you quickly dispatch the rest of the attackers as Ivan drags two barely alive assailants into the war room. Merdock clutching his stab wound pulls another raider. They invite you in. As they tie the guards up, Ivan turns to you and offers you a job. He needs paid muscle on his next supply drop in Kinaros. Then he will drop you off wherever you need to go.
The party was recovering and resting in The Kraken's Nest. You mourned the death of your friend Borno while also stealing from his corpse. Spent time getting asking questions to the locals, Chris bought a Caluan Cookbook. Watched as Ivan killed an old blind man who sold out the location to Lord Borigan. Merdock decided to invite you to his guilty pleasure, beast fights. You bet money as the Flail Snail defeated the basilisk, the redcap and the jaculus. You finished off buying provisions and boarded The Kraken.
