Thyferra

"There it is, Thyferra. Possibly the most important planet in the galaxy, and yet anyone other than a star-trader would be hard-pressed to place it on a galactic map. I know I was one of them when I graduated from the Academy. Wild, warm, humid, and covered in lush vegetation with a disappointing lack of predators: it'd be just another do-nothing tourist location in our great Empire if it weren't for the bacta. And even then the Empire would take all the bacta production off-world and core-ward if it weren't for the Vratix and their monopoly on the production of the stuff. The shame is that the Empire absolutely depends on the bacta Thyferra produces, and despite all experience Thyferra wants to be a part of the Empire. And this is the gem in the crown I've been given."

Geography

Thyferra is a planet defined by its thick vegetation and a warm greenhouse effect upon which the flora and fauna thrive. With the vast majority of its surface enshrouded in humid, foggy low-lands wedged in between jagged ranges of mountains and deeply-carved erosion trenches, topographic maps of the planet's surface tend to have a fingerprint-like texture when viewed at scale. While the poles and some of its highest summits are frozen over, three-quarters of the planet never experiences temperatures cold enough to experience snow at any time of the year.   The planet has a few small seas connected by dense river networks, but a lack of oceans means that the biomes and geography of the planet are rather flat. This contributes greatly to its one-clime characteristic, while the sharp ranges of mountains and thick atmosphere of the planet lend it rather extreme weather variations, including storm systems that can dominate as much as a quarter of the planet's surface at one time.

Fauna & Flora

Thyferra lacks many of the predators that tend to dominate jungles on planets elsewhere in the galaxy, likely contributing to the open and pacifist nature of the native Vratix. Besides the insectoid Vratix who make up the sole sentient species native to the planet, the Knytix--a dog-sized insectoid species--are the next most numerous species on the planet. The Knytix serve a pivotal role in Vratix culture, serving as pet, meatsource, and raised for the unique resin-like saliva it excretes that the Vratix use as a ubiquitous building material.   The Vratixian Blood Eagle, one of the planet's rare predators and the apex predator of all fauna on Thyferra, is a large carnivorous bird that roosts in the ledges and nooks of Thyferra's innumerable cliffs and canyons. Its said that their territorial rule of Thyferra's upper canopies is largely responsible for the Vratix' general incurious nature and disdain for exploration.   Two pieces of flora on Thyferra are of note. Xoorzi fungus, abundant in Thyferran mines and mountains, is a natural and efficient source of alazhi, one of the key ingredients in bacta production. Despite being abundant on Thyferra, it is sensitive to environmental changes, which has led the Republic and later the Empire to protect Thyferra from industrial development as the fungus has yet to tolerate introduction to other planets in the past. Secondly, the Gloan tree, which makes up most of the jungle forests of Thyferra, still serves as the principal building material on Thyferra, followed by Knytix resin.

Natural Resources

Thyferra's sole export of any importance is bacta. One of the most profitable materials in the galaxy--akin to kyber, hyperfuel, and tibanna gas--natural bacta is notable for being produced on only one planet in the galaxy. As such, Thyferra is an important world that can largely dictate its terms when trading with other worlds, affording the Vratix--and the human-run bacta cartels--some measure of autonomy to suit.   Thyferra could also make a killing exporting Knytix resin and Gloan trees if not for the Empire's strict protection of the Thyferran environment. In fact, these controls ensure that Knytix resin and Gloan trees are staples of the Thyferran black market and are a great way for off-worlders to display their wealth in terms of furnishings.   On the import side, Thyferra suffers from its anemic industrial base, and so technology and refined resources are always dealt with as a premium. And since the local environment is not conducive to farming humanoid-friendly foodstuffs, Thyferra's human overlords are always importing entire cargo-holds full of food.
