Soul Tree
Overview
This school of necromancy deals with the souls of creatures. Altering them and manipulating them.
Soul Speech Branch
Soul speaking allows a necromancy to summon a souls consciousness to speak with. This is one of the only ways to speak and partially summon a soul without harming it.
The speaking soul will not be able to speak of anything behind the vail because it will not remember anything about it. It will only remember what it experienced as it lived and it will remember any conversation that it had with other necromancers.
Soul Alteration Branch
This branch of magic alters and twists living souls. To do this the soul must be a necromancer and take part in truly dark rituals. The only way to really alter a necromancer soul in an extreme way is to have them eat ghosts, the souls of the dead if you will. When eating ghosts they also consume a tremendous amount of death energy and absorb it into their soul. This process alters them and their being until they become what's called a Grimvani. A grimvani is an altered necromancer who has altered their soul with dark emotions, and necrotic energy. Grimvani powers and forms alter greatly between one another and rarely have anything in common.
Shared abilities and attributes between Grimvani:
Grimvani have a need to consume flesh, as they gorge on the dead's flesh and soul they also consume all the death energy generated by their deaths increasing their demonic forms and powers.
Grimvani take on monstrous forms that are dark and twisted. They often loose their intelligence and just become ravenous predentary beasts ruled by instincts. Very rarely do Grimvani retain their intelligence. Their farms are usually beast like, they posses the skulls of predatory monsters and black bodies possessing fur, or scales, or skin.
All Grimvani have mad glowing blue eyes.
Grimvani have the power to create darkness around themselves, such a darkness wont allow light like torches to penetrant it.
They can only walk during the night, during the day they hide somewhere dark and are dead during the day. Or at least appear to be so.
The only way to permanently kill a Grimvani is to cut off their heads, turn their bodies to ash, and dumb their ashes into salt water.
Soul Summoning Branch
A Necromancer can use the remains of the dead to fully summon a soul from the vail. Doing this will twist and break the soul, this process will also make the ghost visible and ethereal. These souls can be used to fight, spy, and speak for the necromancer. Souls can be turned into specific types of spectral beings.
Wraith: Wraiths are created by channeling necrotic energy into them. They are used to spy, endues nightmares, and damage the minds of a necromancers targets.
Poltergeist: These are created by summoning truly angered souls, souls fueled by rage and aggression. They are used to manipulate the physical battlefield. Such as throwing weapons, denting armor, or haunting buildings.
Banshee: Banshees are created from truly tortured and broken souls. Their screams can totally disable a small army and cause people to go deaf permanently.
Gaul: Gaul's are created from dark souls. They are used to phase through the bodies of a necromancers targets damaging their bodies.
Soul Binding Branch
This branch of soul magic is difficult to practice and study but it is well known for being the gate way to lichtdom. Only living souls can be turned into litchs, because only living souls are whole and powerful enough to survive the process. Calling back the souls of those who have passed on become broken and twisted when raised. To soul bind the person must offer their soul willingly to the necromancer, it cannot be taken by force or it will become a broken soul as the person will need to be killed for the soul to be taken by force. Once there is a willing soul it will be taken out of the body and placed into a phylactery. A phylactery can really be anything, all a phylactery needs in order to be a phylactery is to have a gem filled with the willing soul and draloth inscription placed around the gem and imbedded into the object. the phylactery will harbor the soul and keep the lich forever alive. After the binding the soul will be able to control it's old body, at least until the body dies from natural causes or is killed. Then the soul will return to it's phylactery. It will need a new body to inhabit, and it can only get a new body if one dies near it's phylactery. The souls that are bound to phylacteries will grow in power over time, to the point to where other necromances will worship them as gods, powerful litch's care capable of inhabiting abominations. It's common for cults to create powerful constructs of bone and flesh for litch's to inhabit.
Broken souls can be bound into gems but those usually only serve to raise abominations, or to act as words to protect items, homes, or hoards of necromancers. A broken soul placed within a gem and bound into an item can be used to guard things and strike out at anything that gets near it. Broken souls are not litchs as they cannot inhabit bodies. However souls that willingly allowed themselves to be taken from their living bodies can become litch's.
