The Siege of Huelva Military Conflict in Gaia Verim | World Anvil

The Siege of Huelva

The Siege of Huelva marked a significant turning point in The War for Huelva after Asada Ziyad II and her troops successfully defended Huelva Castle for two and half weeks against Charlemagne's army against all odds. Using clever and daring night raids, Asada II was able to destroy siege equipment, set traps, and steal supplies from the Yorleouxan's until Asada II was almost killed in a confrontation with Charlemagne on the 8th day of Julius. After this point, the L'yonian troops defending Huelva gave ground to the overwhelming assault until they only held the center keep. Unable to sabotage the enemy and ith food running low, defeat was imminent. However, on the 11th day of Julius, the Golden Lion's Army arrived to spoil Charlemagne's hopes of ever holding Huelva Castle and forced him to briefly retreat to reorganize for what would be known as the Battle at Hermit's Pass.

The Conflict

Prelude

On the 18th day of Juno in 1287, King Charlemagne III of Yorleoux invaded the Kingdom of L'yon after being fed false information by Ammon Ptoma, an agent of Al'Shan Kull. After assassinating the King's own son, Crown Prince Charlemagne IV, Ammon planted evidence of the Crown Prince's murder on Santiago Hernandez, a well known and influential trader from L'yon. Ammon, disguised with Illusion magic to appear as the King's adviser, encouraged Charlemagne III to invade L'yon to avenge his son's death. Enraged and heartbroken by his son's death, Charlemagne III played right into Ammon's hand and immediately organized an attack through Hermit's Pass to besiege Castle Huelva. After entering Hermit's Pass, war was officially declared.

Deployment

Without proper warning, the Kingdom of L'yon scrambled to organize an army to fight Charlemagne's invasion force. Charlemagne capitalized on this, quickly marching to Huelva Castle. It seemed, however, that Charlemagne's ignorance of history would spoil his plans. Huelva Castle is the home of House Ziyad, the greatest defenders and military tacticians L'yon has ever birthed. Led by the prodigal daughter of Yatahamal Ziyad, Asada Ziyad II was more than prepared for such a hasty invasion. Having spotted the invasion force entering Hermit's Pass due well trained scouts, Asada organized a series of traps and ambushes to slow down the Yorleouxan force's advance to Huelva Castle. Though effective in their work, Asada's troops were unable to stop the much larger Yorleouxan force from eventually reaching their walls by the 25 day of Juno.

Outcome

Being able to hold Charlemagne in one place that long gave the Kingdom of L'yon the momentum they needed to regain control of this conflict. The losses both to manpower and supplies that Yorleouxan forces suffered were significant enough to level the playing field during the Battle at Hermit's Pass. While the L'yonian army gathered and began it march north, Asada's night raids and stalwart defense weakened the Yorleouxan resolve.
