Metal Mill

Location

The Metal Mill is found in Segment 8 of Zone 3.

Purpose

The Metal Mill has two purposes. First to recycle all metals that are put into a variety of the recycling collection points of Birdencaster and to process them into useful items for other industries, such as making sheets of steel for the rolling stock factory. Secondly is to produce items themselves such as making rails for the rail industry.

Recycling Metals

The metals to be recycled are washed and melted down and turned into an ingot weighing 3.5kg (7lbs 11.46oz). It is the Job of the Metal Roller Technician to process the ingot further materials such as sheeting or square or round rods. Which are then either used in further processes or sold at the Warehouses.   For metals that are imported, they are more likely to come in 1 kilogram (2lbs 3.27oz) ingots, recycled metals are heavier at 3.5kg (7lbs 11.46oz). This is the case except for Gold and Silver where the imports are at 100g (3.53oz) for Gold and 500g (1lbs 1.64oz) for Silver.

Production of Metal Items

For Cold Worked Metals, that can be worked cold and may need to be annealed to be worked further. For aluminium, it is extruded into parts, the excess metal is then remelted.

Rails

Hot Worked metals are kept hot to be worked. Steel for example is formed through rollers to get the steel to the right dimensions this also has the added advantage of lengthening the steel [1]. Next, the steel is reheated, cut down to shorter lengths and passed through rollers that give the rail its distinctive T shape [1]. The end of the rail is cut to square off the rail. The rail is then passed through two forming rollers that ensure that the rail is perfectly square and runs true.

Sheeting

For sheets of metal regardless of whether it is hot or cold worked is put between two rollers until it is at the right thickness it is then cut to the right size. The excess is then remelted down. The metal sheeting may go down other processes such as being galvanised and cut into circles to be made into cans. Or alternatively, the sheet metal can be sold at Warehouses.

Round and Square Metal Stock

Square stock is made from thick sheet stock. It is the square stock that is rounded to make round stock. Depending on the diameter or of the stock, will depend on where it is going 1cm thick round stock of copper often finds its way to the Redsmiths. Much wider brass stock is found at the Clockworks Department. Stock that is thinner than the 1cm and is brass is for Brownsmiths.
