Races of the Shattered Seas

The Peoples of the World

The world of the Shattered Seas is home to many different peoples, the various races of men, the Vvulfjr, Panthera and their tribes too name a few. Serving as an introduction to the races of the Shattered Seas, this article will go over the various races and ethnic groups therein.

The races of the Shattered Seas can be broken down into two main catagories; the first being the races of men and the second being the far folk. The term far folk refers to the origins of the peoples, be them from the distant lands of the Material, or beings from other planes and realms brought through as a product of the Shattering and the Fallen's corruption. By no means does being a product of corruption mean they are inherintly corrupt themselves, but rather that they have been pulled in from further realms due to the strength of the Fallen's power.

The Races of Men

Humans

By far the most numerous race within the Shattered Seas the humans make up the majority of the nations of the world. They have many distinct cultures and appearances spread across the world, who view themselves as differently as they do the other races of the world. The positive of this is that local culture and national identity often play a larger role than race in determining kinship with the other peoples of the world.

Bledan

The men of Whitehelm are commonly refered to as Bledans, these humans are decended from the first colonists from Pelliny-Nation. Having been seperate and living with the Vvulfjr, their cultures have diverged greatly. With the Bledans focusing on the realities of harsh landscape of Whitehlem. The Bledans and Vvulfjr had long had a strained relationship, but over the years these relations have steadily improved.

Cal-Atheran

Corsyran

Pelliny-Race

Dwarves

The Dwarves are an uncommon sight in the Shattered Seas, hailing from the mountains about Cal-Cardimy the dwarves have a small native range. Many have spread across Athera, Pelliny, and Bleda over the centuries but are rare outside of County Cardimy. These skilled craftsmen are part of what has established Cal-Cardimy's reputation as exceltent smiths.

Elves

Although a minority, Elves are common throughout the heartlands often intermarrying and procreating with humans. The Elves of the Heartlands are most common in Athera and Pelliny. There are fewer within the Raider States as they had been removed from power as the region fell into disorder after the Shattering. These Elves have some inate magical ability, as they felt the connection to the far lands during the Shattering.

Gnomes

Like Dwarves, Gnomes of the Shattered Seas are native to a very small range. Native to County Edus of Athera, the Gnomes live and work along side their Dwarven and Human counterparts. These gnomes are known for a knack for inventive mechanisms. While Cardimy is known for their expert smiths, Edus and the Gnomes are known for their skillful tinkerers and weapon crafters.

Half-Elves

The product of interbreeding between the humans and elves, Half-Elves embody many of the attributes of both parent species. The half-elves are particularly common in the Atheran Frontier, Southern Gothics, and Coastal. Although Half-Elves are found where ever large Elven and human populations live. While there are almost no Elves in Whitehelm, there are a number of half-elves who have found their way to Bleda.

Halfling

The rural regions of Athera, Pelliny, and the Raider States are home to small populations of halflings. The halflings are said to have originated from humans, and are well known for their connection to the land. Skilled farmers, and tenders of the lands. The halflings are also known for their nimble hands and exceptional luck.

Far Folk

The Far Folk represent many different races all of which are far more different than the differences between the races of men. Many of these peoples are newer to the Shattered Seas than the races of man, some brought here by the powers of the Fallen in the lead up to the Shattering. Others such as the Vvulfjr or Panthera are native to the Shattered Seas, where as the Dregen are somewhere between the two.

Aarakocra

Aarakocra are a few and rarely seen people. Like the Tritons the Aarakocra were pulled through from the elemental plane of air, however they were only brought across in small numbers. These wardens of the sky fly the world seeking the corruption of The Fallen. Many of their people have fallen in the defense of the world from threats beyond. Those that are left wander the world in hopes of reuniting their dwindling people, and righting wrongs they encounter in their travels.

Aasimar

The celestial born aasimar, hold a deep connection to divine and celestial plane. Holding some powers gifted by their ancestory, the Aasimar at a glance are nearly indistinguishable from normal humans, but upon closer inspection each bare at least one sign of their ancestry. The real differences come when they call on their powers. There are only a few Aasimar left in the world as their bloodlines have been bled by the centuries of warfare.

Dregen

The Dregen are perhaps the youngest race in the Shattered Seas, having been first encountered in Blackbrook some three hundred years after the Shattering. Within Dregen society their are many casts of Dregens which all bare distinct physical appearences. Said to be the product of the diminishment of the corruption of The Fallen and the weakening of the progenitor dragons. The first of these casts is the High Dregen, or Dragonborn as they are often called. The second being the Dregen, or Lizardfolk. The third are the Lesser Dregen, the newest and most feral cast which are often called Kobalds. With each of these peoples having such extreme differences it is hard for most other races to identify them as the same people. The Dregens themselves do recognize these differences with the High Dregen holding nearly all important positions within their society, and the Lesser Dregen being fully cast from their communities.

High Dregen, Dragonborn

Dregen, Lizardfolk

Lesser Dregen, Kobald

Goblin

Originally pulled over in great number by The Fallen's corruption, though disappearing nearly immediately when his power diminished. Seen as a plague, the goblins were known as raiders and dangers of the night. They were target of the armies of the empire during that period. Rumors have started to circulate of goblins being seen across the Atheran Frontier, and towns already strained by the threats of war now face new threats.

Goliath

The powerful giant folk are native to the northern mountains. Living in rough tribal communities the goliaths are some of the largest and strongest of all peoples of the Shattered Seas. It is unknown how many of their people remain in the mountains, but few ever leave their homelands. There is a rumored city of the Goliaths in the pale valley, a region nearly inaccessable.

Hobgoblin

Distantly related to the goblins, hobgoblins are a powerful martial race. A force which sought to carve out a place for their people, they have organized themselves and the goblins to combat the nations of men. Like many of the other Far-Folk, the hobgoblins were first pulled into the world by the corruption of The Fallen. Having largely disappeared after his corruption faded, talks of the red warlords has returned to the wild regions of the Heartlands.

Orc

Orcs are one of the races which are a product of The Fallen's corruption, pulled from realms unknown by a corrupted god the Orcs came to the Shattered Seas. In great number, but disorganized and without purpose the orcs found themselves in a new realm. With the world full, the Orcs would have to try and carve their own place out from the established powers. Although disapearing at the end of the Shattering, Orcs have begun to return to the world in small numbers. Though they do have aggressive tendancies, and are desperate to find a place for their people the orcs are not inheriantly a corrupt people. They are however seen as dangerous and a threat to the smaller human settlements.

Panthera

The Panthera unlike the Dregen and many of the far folk are native to the Shattered Seas, but like the Dregen have diverged into two nearly seperate species since the fall of their empire. Having lost much of their old ways, the Panthera have diverged into the Vestige and some tribes have withered into the Tabaxi

Panthera

The Panthera are the powerful feline men of the southrald. Once the dominant species on the continent, the Panthera were nearly eradicated during a slave revolt of the humans of the Southrald. With only their only city left, the Vestige hold on to their former pride. While the tribes focus on the hardship of survival, facing the harsh savannahs, deserst, and jungles. Under constant threat from human settlers, rival tribes, or the roving Gnoll bands.

Tabaxi

With the difficulty of the life of the tribes, some have lost their former strength and size. With the scarcity of food and the severe heat maintaining such a powerful size and frame was impractical and over many generations the people of some of these tribes decreased in size, and strength. The Tabaxi are swift and agile, skilled craftsmen and hunters.

Triton

The Triton's are an uncommon race, having crossed over from the elemental plane of water by the rifts caused during The Shattering. The Tritons that were pulled over came to reside in the Shattered Sea. This new realm was a dangerous place, with many great and powerful creatures coming to call the Sea home. The Tritons have come to protect the world from the dangers of the deep. Over the millenia their numbers have dwindled as the threats they face have only increased.

Vvulfjr

The wolfmen of the north as they are often called by the humans, are native to Whitehelm. Liviing in small tribal communities the Vvulfjr are capable hunters and warriors, who stalk the forests and planes of their homeland. Having a long strained relationship with the Bledans and Eastern, the Vvulfjr have long seen their lands taken from them. However relations with the Bledan have improved, steadily over the last centuries.

Campaign Setting Information

The Races

There are some differences between the Shattered Seas as a campaign setting and a narrative one. One of those is the emphisis on the Far Folk, and other races of men. As a campaign setting, the Shattered Seas is meant to allow many kinds of fantasy, which has brought the inclusion of many of the typical fantasy races. These races in particular are those with roots in the Shattering and the Corruption of the Fallen. Where as in the narative the races are more limited. In narative the race of men is only made up of humans, while the Dregen, Panthera, and Vvulfjr are the only common Far-Folk.
