The Enlightenment | Просвещение

Earth was rid of Inhumans: Romans did it. Even earlier, the Chinese did it in their lands. American Inhumans went the same way many Native Americans went, succumbing to unknown diseases against which they had no protection whatsoever. Many other species just died out due to constant raiding and pillaging by humanity.

Землю избавили от нелюдей: римляне сделали это ещё давно. А ещё раньше этим и китайцы промышляли. Американские нелюди разделили судьбу индейцев, массово умирая от неизвестных им болезней. Многие иные виды вымерли из-за постоянных рейдов и погромов, учинённых людьми.

Earth was rid of Magic: Christians burned witches wherever they went: first in their lands, then in far realms during the era of Colonization. And Magical Decay did the rest, making spellcasters weaker and vulnerable against those who hated them or those who envied them.

Землю избавили от магии: христиане сжигали ведьм, где бы ни появлялись - сначала в своих землях, затем в далёких королевствах в эпоху колонизации. А Утечка уже сделала остальное: заклинатели стали слабее и не могли защищаться от завистников и ненавистников.

Now, in the year 1648 Anno Domini, Earth was getting ready to be rid of Memory. Of Wonders. Fringe Society believes in a historical cycle where trends rise, become common, slowly become corrupted, the process that starts almost right away... And then these trends faded. Before recorded history and some time after, it was the Age of Inhumans. Then, the Age of Magic came and held until 11-12th centuries. The Age of Religion took precedence in the world (mostly, Europe and Middle East, though. In many other areas these ages these trends coexisted to some extent, though not without violent societal changes.

Общество Грани верит в исторический цикл, в котором явления появляются, возвышаются, постепенно коррумпируются в процессе возвышения ещё... А потом угасают. Древние времена знаменовались таким явлением как правление Нелюдей. Потом была эпоха Магии, вплоть до 11-12 веков. Далее возвысилась религия. В Европе, в основном, да на Ближнем Востоке, ведь в других местах все три явления вполне себе сосуществовали, хоть и не без постоянных жестоких междуусобиц.

Anyway, the Age of Religion was also coming to an end after the Religious Wars, last of which was the bloodiest conflict in history at the time. One lifetime of war between Catholics and Protestants slowly started turning thinking minds away from religion and towards science. And here, a question lied. Why do people believe? Most of them try to live their lives piously enough to prove their worth, so they could live in a heavenly afterlife. Life is nothing compared to the eternity. All trials and tribulations of existence were just a test. But what kind of god tests people with a bloody war that goes on for three decades?

Один из самых кровавых конфликтов в истории, Тридцатилетняя война, привела к тому, что мыслители начали очень медленно отворачиваться от веры и приходить к науке. И вот появился вопрос. Почему люди верят?. Большинство пытаются вести праведную жизнь, чтобы после смерти попасть в рай. Ведь жизнь ничто по сравнению с вечностью. А все ужасы и несправедливости на Земле - это так, проходной момент, это испытания, что нам даны, чтобы доказать нашу праведность. Но какой бог позволяет людям нещадно убивать друг друга на протяжении трёх десятилетий?

Then, the doubt came. What if gods (and many religions at this point thought claimed that their god is the only one. Together, it's still multiple gods.) didn't really influence Sun rising, rains falling, people living? Nobody had the answer to this question until something called Scientific Method came around.

А потом пришло и сомнение. Что если боги (конечно, многие религии уже к этому моменту утверждали, что их бог единственно верный. Впрочем, если соединить все эти религии, то богов будет много) не влияют на то, что солнце восходит, идёт дождь и на то как живут люди? Ни у кого ответа на этот вопрос не было, пока не появился Научный метод...

Discovery

One foggy freezing morning in Paris someone had an idea to try and use Speak with Dead spell to learn more about the afterlife. This spell was quite an easy one for potent casters, though not many of them were around anymore thanks to the Catholics. Nevertheless, this person - let's call him or her "The Scientist" - found a way to cast it. Speaking with dead was primarily used to solve crimes, learn about hidden treasures or finding out the deceased's last will and testament. The spell worked not for long, it could be cast only minutes after the target's death, and then no soul responded to it. But that was enough.

Одним туманным и холодным парижским утром у кого-то появилась идея использовать заклинание "Разговор с мёртвыми", чтобы выяснить побольше о загробной жизни. Это довольно простое колдовство для умелых чудотворцев, но их не так то и много осталось благодаря католикам. Да и если использовали это заклинание, то чтобы услышать последнюю волю усопшего, или узнать о спрятанном сокровище, либо чтобы преступление раскрыть. Произнести его надо было за несколько минут после смерти цели, иначе её душа просто не ответит. Но этого было достаточно.

In the year 1699, their experiment started. The Scientist asked every Christian, every Muslim, every Pagan and every believer in other religions one simple question. "What did you see or feel before we summoned you?" And everybody had different experiences. Some were afraid cause they were descending to Hell. Some almost joined the eternal feast with their gods. Some were getting ready for an eternity of pleasures. Some saw their fallen enemies coming for them, some rejoiced because they were about to rejoin their loved ones. How could it be? Were there different hells for Christians and Muslims? Why do they all see different things? The Scientist was puzzled. They retired to their home and didn't show up for fifty long years.

В 1699 году начался эксперимент. Учёный - назовём эту личность так - опросил христиан, мусульман, язычников - да кого угодно - после смерти. Он задавал простой вопрос: "Что ты видел или чувствовал перед тем, как мы тебя призвали?". И ответ всегда был разным. Они видели Ад и боялись его. Они видели вечный пир, в котором примут участие. Они готовились к бесконечным удовольствиям. Некоторые видели поверженных врагов, что за ними пришли. Некоторые - своих родных, с коими воссоединялись. Учёный подумал, как вообще такое возможно? Существуют разные Ады для мусульман и христиан? Почему все видят разное? Учёный запутался и ретировался в свой дом, откуда носу не казал полвека.

In the year 1749, a letter came to those Enlightened minds that lived in Paris at the time, calling them to arrive at a certain time to the house of The Scientist. Jean D'Alembert, Denis Diderot, Emilie du Chatelet, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and, of course, Voltaire. They all were in time, and when a terrified servant opened the door to them, they were surprised to find a dead body and a note asking them to cast Speak with Dead on the body. The Scientist's spirit came before them. And they proclaimed: "I gave my life to this puzzle and now I know the answer. One that dies goes wherever One believes should go. God doesn't decide if we join Him or face Lucifer, only we do. I tried to solve this riddle all my life but deep down I knew that I'll know the answer when I die. And the answer is: we do not need gods. They need us. They exist because of our belief".

В 1749 году различным просвещённым умам пришло приглашение в дом Учёного. Алембер, Дидро, дю Шателе, Руссо, Вольтер, конечно же. Все прибыли вовремя и, когда испуганный до ужаса слуга открыл им дверь, увидели тело и записку с просьбой произнести около него заклинание разговора с мертвецами. И появился пред ними дух Учёного, и изрёк: "Всю свою жизнь я отдал разгадке и знаю теперь ответ. Тот, кто умирает попадает туда, куда он считает, что должен попасть. Бог не решает, встретимся ли мы с Ним или Люцифером. Лишь мы это понимаем. Всю жизнь я ломал голову над этим, но в глубине души знал: узнаю правду лишь когда помру. И узнал: боги нам не нужны, им нужны мы. Они существуют потому, что мы верим.

Aftermath

The Enlightened ones were shocked at this revelation and took some time to think. They all came to two conclusions. Half of them thought it was now their mission to free the minds of the living of this self-built prisons and slaveries. Explain them the truth and let them decide. But the other half thought differently: if the commoners learned of it, there would be chaos and rioting without an end. Being Enlightened minds, they kept arguing without doing anything with this information except maybe telling the story of The Scientist to someone. And then French Revolution happened. By that time there weren't many Inhumans or Spellcasters around anyway, but people still remembered stories about them. Some even witnessed Magic at some point of their lives. But with this new era of an early, a chaotic brand of modern democracy, and people thinking in categories of empires, not in categories of their own homes, led to eventual oblivion of all these things. Those who wanted to spread The Scientist's message did it carefully not to anger the Church since it still held some power, thus rarely talking about Inhumans and Magic. And Church probably already knew about The Scientist's exploits and did everything in their institutional power to make people thing these wondrous things were all fiction, because if magic doesn't exist, how could The Scientist use magic to prove their theory? Come the end of XIX century, very few still remembered... The Enlightenment meant the end of Wonders - for everyone.

Просвещённые умы были в шоке от этого откровения. Удалились "на подумать". И в итоге разделились на два лагеря. Одни считали, что сообщение мёртвого Учёного надо было распространить, чтобы люди освободили себя из самодельных тюрем и рабств Веры. Рассказать им правду и позволить решать. Другие же боялись, что стоит простолюдинам это рассказать, начнётся хаос. И не закончится. Так и провели всё время, споря, думая, не особо распространяясь об открытии Учёного, разве что рассказывая паре знакомых время от времени. И доспорились до момента, когда случилась Великая Французская Революция. Люди, что обычно думали о доме да семье, начали думать об империях. И в их мыслях для магии и нелюдей места уже не оставалось. "Помогли" и сами просвещённые умы: они пытались что-то да рассказать людям, но делали это так осторожно, боясь гнева всё ещё влиятельной Церкви, что в итоге запутали всех ещё сильнее. Сама Церковь тоже знала уже об откровении Учёного, и ей было выгодно, чтобы такая вещь как магия, была забыта. Ведь если не было никакой магии, как Учёный подтвердил свою теорию? К концу 19 века уже мало кто помнил про всё это... Просвещение было концом эпохи Чудес. Для всех.

Scientist

We do not know much about The Scientist themselves, but some believe the closest to him went on and saw what the Enlightened minds did with the revelation with their inaction and compliance with the Church. They watched helplessly as the texts about Elven druidic practices burned, the precious magical artifacts were hidden away from them... And these followers of The Scientist must have decided to try and save what they could. And just like that, one other foggy freezing morning, in the middle of Paris, the Fringe Society was born...

Мы мало знаем о личности Учёного, но ходят разговоры, что его родные и близкие увидели, что просвещённые умы сотворили с его откровением своим бездействием и попыткой не обидеть Церковь, с которой он и боролся. Они беспомощно наблюдали за тем как горели ценные тексты об эльфийских друидских практиках, как Ватикан прятал от них бесценные магические артефакты... Видимо, эти люди, наследники Изобретателя, решили попытаться спасти хотя бы что могут. Так и родилось Общество Грани, в ещё одно туманное холодное утро, в самом центре Парижа...
