Volcano Stew

by hughpierre
An inauthentic stew that locals tend to make for foreigners rather than themselves.

Execution

Slow Cooker

  1. Dig a shallow pit into the volcanic sand at a pre-level location with active volcanic activity. Ensure it is deep enough to fully cover your cooking vessel.
  2. Choose a heat-resistant vessel (metal or ceramic) with a lid that can withstand high temperatures and trap the heat.
    • Prepare bowls of marinated meats, seasoned vegetables, spices or herbs.
  3. Nestle the vessel into the hot volcanic sand, ensuring that it is stable and well-supported.
  4. Place the lid over the cooking vessel to seal in the heat and leave overnight.
  5. Periodically check the food to ensure it is cooking evenly.
  6. Carefully remove the vessel from the hot sand with prongs and mitts.

Participants

Duskies Households

The duskies still living in Canna are nearly outnumbered by the invading Innoit by about one-tenth.   On special occasions, a few families would make volcano stew as a novel way to cook a large meal for many. Native duskies don't make it often though, since:
  • it is very labour intensive
  • picks up the taste of sulphur
  • damages cooking utensils
  • These houses are on fire and they smell that way.

    Observance

    Twice Daily

Lacking much wood or coal for fuel, the cannanites remaining in the city were activated to cook food for their invaders in high quantities as part of their mit'a obligations. To accomplish this, the locals have utilized this "Brew in the Earth" technique to both satisfy this demand, as well as to feed them a stew that is generally foul tasting.
