The Scar of Lynia

The basic currency of the Empire

Written by TheArchitectSol

A dusty leather clad palm is held outstretched as several bright bronze coins fall from a small rough spun purse down into it. Colliding with one another as the old wiry man paid his promised wage to the field hand who helped him bring in the crops for Harvest.   Three glittering amber coins fall into the tin bowl that acted as a beggar's dish, joining the multitude of others and the occasional much larger silver coin.   In a dark alleyway, blood runs red across the unpaved ground. The crimson soaking into the dirt among displaced copper bits that trail away from a soon to be lifeless body and around the corner, a discarded dagger not too far away from the last copper piece to mark the trail of the murderer. Copper is valuable in Lynia, and it is the most common traded level of currency.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The copper piece is used as the base unit of currency in Lynia and most small towns and villages will rely on coppers instead of silver or gold for ease of access and trade.

Manufacturing process

The Iron ingot weighing approximately 5750 grams must be melted at 1538 celcius. Then the liquid metal is poured into the mold and each copper coin is released after the intended cooling period and then mint marked with a stamp bisecting the coins diagonally. The last coin from the mold is slightly lighter than the other copper pieces and is called the Mint Coin and is considered lucky.

Significance

Lynia is a young empire but an old country. It's history is steeped in slavery and servitude. It's forging was in chains and blood and their currency reflect their past history unapologetically. During the centuries under the yoke of Ordod the Red Destroyer and the Chromatic Council of Aurex , the mortal races of Moradin who resided in the region that would become Lynia were enslaved and their freedoms annulled as their vengeful and proud Draconic overlords basked in their auspicious occupation of Aurex, named the Valley of Gold for the riches of Moradin the Red flowed freely there. Like rivers of wealth. Despite this wealth, the draconic overlords allowed their slaves to mill about themselves with copper. A precious metal to be sure but not as precious as silver, or gold, or the rarity platinum. Copper to them meant nothing but to their slaves it meant the world. Every citizen of Aurex who wasn't a Dragonlord or close enough to one, substantiated themselves with some small economy based around the copper. After the revolution the newly formed Empire of Lynia remained using this copper standard system and named the coins Scars in honor of their past. All of the hardship and pain that lead to their formulation.   The Scar is the lowest denomination of currency in Lynia and despite the Empire's amassing wealth, most of it's citizens still rely upon copper in their day to day lives outside of the larger cities were supplies and exotic goods are readily available. The common citizen of Lynia might only amass several gold coins in their lifetime, while the extremely wealthy will never use a copper in a transaction. There is a metaphorical symbol that takes place with using the Lynian Scar as the base currency, a memento mori for every Citizen every time they make a purchase. They bare their scars when they purchase their first sword, or bow, cattle or a horse. A purchase made with a copper in Lynia is a purchase earned through grit and determination as well as resilience. Or so the saying goes.

In Foreign Trade & Exchange

The Lynian Scar is still worth it's value of copper no matter where it is being used. However the lesser developed or prosperous countries - that also have a unified banking system - will favor the Lynian Scar more than countries that are similar in prosperity. For instance, Veltuul to the West will hold the Lynian Scar above five of their own coppers because of the relationship Lynia currently maintains with the bankrupt region.
