Sidion Settlement in Forlorn | World Anvil

Sidion

“Don’t make a deal with a Devil. But if you do, get it in writing!”

Demographics

The largest city has a population of 27 thousand people, the second largest 21 thousand. There are 10 other cities of note in the confederacy, and 60 towns. The remaining population lives in numerous small villages, isolated dwellings, etc.

Government

Sidinese Government is a true example of an effective Oligarchy. Twelve Lords and/or Ladies hold power over the entire Confederacy as joint and allied powers. One from each of the twelve regions of their joined territory. Each individual Lord/Lady controls the immediate laws of their areas of influence. Some tax their citizens and others choose not to, impressing compulsory military service unto their populations instead of skimming the gross domestic product. However, each Lord/Lady pay tithes to the only individual who sits above them in absolute power.

The Prince of Devils

The son of Asmodeus Supreme Master of the Nine, sits as the absolute ruler of Sidion. His nature as a leader has been aloof and loose, a mirror image of his father. His name is unknown by most of his subjects for many reasons. Names hold great power, which he understands. He will respond to "My Prince" or "Your Eminence." The Prince of Devils has the power to overturn or overrule any decision made by the council and he has only exercised that power twice. The Prince of Devils commands his own personal army of Devils from the Nine Layers of hell. Separate from the standing military that Sidion possesses.

Notable Laws

The First Writ of Xunth

This document is recorded on stone slabs of basalt in Zar'aaleth's palace quarter. This set of laws codifies the rules of engagement for the Blood War that is always waging between the Nine Layers and the Abyss. It was the primary codex by which Sidion operated for thousands of years as they conquered Southern Moradin from the Primordial forces and the Hordes of the Abyss.

The Harmonious Contingency

This contingency plan was put into effect by Lady Harmony of Shoal upon the realization that Demons could create Tieflings in a similar manner as Devilkind. It compounds on the tenants present within the First Writ of Xunth and denounces those who would consort with demon-kind for any reason whatsoever. It is a widely unpopular set of laws because of the broad stroke it paints Tieflings and some spellcasters and the usually fatal compromises it brings to those it targets.

The Accords of Confidence

These sets of laws were codified after three centuries beneath the shadow of Lady Harmony's culling. A rival Lord put multiple steps into place that those who were enacting the Contingency needed to satisfy in order to carry it out to its fullest. These 'redundancies' made the process less discriminatory towards Tieflings and spellcasters while also increasing accuracy of accusation. Witch-hunts became less tenable.

Defences

Sidion is a wider territory than it is tall. Being so spread out with lots of uninhabited land between cities and towns leaves for a weak conventional interior defense. The borders of the confederacy however are regularly patrolled by the standing military of the twelve Lords and Ladies. The country boasts an impressive naval force. Each major city has been fortified by the respective territorial leader in a myriad of ways that make each population center unique for what it can offer to the whole.

The Seal of Enduring Evil

An ancient seal that was carved into the earth of the Confederacy around Zar'aaleth. It has never been activated and can only be used by the Prince of Devils or it can be triggered by a preset condition. The details of which have been lost to time itself. It is said that the Seal of Enduring Evil will protect the entire original territory of Sidion from all who seek to remove the Devils from this beachhead in the material plane. A relic from the earliest moments of the Blood war waged on this planet of the Material Plane.

Industry & Trade

"Sidion's economy is like a Hydra. Too many heads to truly take it down, there is always a source of income."
The Confederacy of Sidion maintains various economic exports due to the thirteen avenues of fiscal interest it possesses. Each major city and its surrounding area adds to the gross domestic product and value of the entire confederacy. It possesses four Port Cities that funnel the resources that the smaller settlements produce like dyes and wines into the international markets. Bringing wealth to the Confederacy. The Confederacy also possesses many places that manufacture and design its various pieces of advanced technology.

Assets

Sidion prides itself on two things. Information and technology. The vast desert that the confederacy maintains as it's territory is rich in raw materials such as iron and raw ore which the individual Lord/Lady may have mines and quarries to exploit them. Sidion has refined blasting powder into gunpowder and they are more than ready to fund research into more technologies that give them a strategic and economic edge over other world powers.

Guilds and Factions

Council of Twelve - The rulers of Sidion beneath the Prince of Devils.   The Goldfeather Quills - A thieves guild organization based out of Lord's Crossing. Bay Tower Knights Guild - A martial guild based out of Lord's Crossing. Order Grey - A religious guild based out of Lord's Crossing The Tribunal - An Insurrectionist organization of Demons and Demonkind within Sidion.

History

When Demons and Devils crossed over into the Material plane with their legions of damned souls and armies of enthralled servants. They warred for centuries first against the Dragons who inhabited Moradin before the Waking Age, then among themselves after their callous defeat. The constant aggression has transformed the once lush planes and lakes south of Lynia to an inhospitable desert. The grasslands have been obliterated into sand and lakes of cool sapphire waters have become pools of sulfuric acid and lava. The Country of Sidion is ruled by the Prince of Devils who employs a council of twelve to tend to the more boring matters of running a country. A mix between an oligarchy and an absolute monarchy, the country of Sidion deals in secrets and espionage. Always having a ‘leg up’ on their neighbors. Sidion is also at tense odds with the island country of Saltoire, not only for being of the fiendish inclination but for stealing away Dragon Eggs from Lynia when they routed the impending conquest of the Moradin. They took these dragon eggs and the resultant offspring and bred them to create war machines of devastating efficiency. Currently only the Prince of Devils can authorize the usage of dragons, and each of the twelve council families control an assortment of dragons depending on their rank and status. There are twelve main cities in Sidion each are home to one of the twelve families who is headed by a Lord or Lady. Due to the civil unrest between the alignments of Lawful Evil and Chaotic Evil the Prince of Devils has decreed that all demonkin are outlawed and banned from Sidion. Any Tiefling child born with demonic ancestry is executed and the family exiled forever.

Geography

Most of Sidion is a charred desert. With forests of petrified trees and rolling dunes of near endless sand. Oasis once dotted the landscape as did green flora fit for grazing and farming. Now only lava pits and rivers of fire remain were nature's beauty once stood. Poisonous swamps of sulfur and acrid brackish deltas litter the coastlines of most of the Confederacy. To the Northeaster borders, mountains poke through the sand. Creating natural defenses against most threats.
