Scope
The motivation behind building Forge Islands
We are building Forge Islands as a setting we'd like to play in as a team.
Each of the teams we will create will be creating a land that they want others to dive into and discover and have incredible, fun and exciting adventures into. We are doing it in World Anvil so we can "eat our own dogfood" and get to use the tools we build, promote and talk about!
The goal of the project
We are hoping to get to work for a couple of hours each week each in worldbuilding to keep in touch with the hobby and the platform and to create a world by the end of 2023 will be ready for us to play an epic campaign in.
Forge Islands's Unique Selling point
A world of flying islands, Sky ships, dragons and flying whales that is the last warm place to a completely frozen world. Everything is covered by ice apart from the area around the great hearth that emits enough heat and light to keep the frozen ice walls away.
Theme
Genre
The world is a science fantasy world in an age-of-sails clock/mage punk setting. The world might have its dark corners and facing the apocalypse but hope permeates all.
Reader Experience
The people of the islands are survivors that 2 generations ago fled the freezing world and now they all gather around the warmth of the great hearth. Because of this massive migration each island has completely different people with different traditions living there so the world from place to place is quite different. There is a sense of impeding doom as the people who used to live here are no longer and the world is filled with the monster infested ruins of that fallen civilization.
Reader Tone
Things are only calming down after a period of great pain and suffering after the initial migration two generations ago, but as this issue calms down, great new danges arise from the ruins of the fallen empire.
Recurring Themes
The Frost: From time to time the great frost grows inwards as the hearth seems to grow dimmer
The Ruins: the mountains, caves and plains of the flying islands, and the the underwater world is sprawling with ancient ruins infested with monsters
Discovery: The world is largely unexplored. The migrants mostly settled around some of the most welcome shores but there are tons of unexplored lands, in the mountains, small islands, and under the ground and water

Characters have agency and their efforts, if they work together as one, can change the world.

Religion and science are each others throats trying to descern of magic or technology will be the solution to the world's problems. Each of the kingdoms of the world align towards one of the two.
The Ancients are waking up
Monstrous creatures seems to be coming out of the woodwork of the ancient ruins of the world and threaten the very existence of the inhabitants.
The Frost is growing as the Hearth dwindles
Slowly but surely the ice ring around the hearth draws ever closer. The edges of the world are under constant threat.
The world is floating
During the age of migration the world's gravity suddenly went very wrong. Whole piece of land flew up in the sky and flying machines previous incapable of flying now soar through the skies.
