Cascadia
Cascadia is an autarchic non-state spanning the former states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and most of Montana.
Just as in the rest of the country, the Great War of 2077 saw the destruction of the great cities of the Pacific Northwest, leaving only pockets of rural survivors in an irradiated wasteland. The most successful of these formed loose bands of semi-nomadic hunter/gatherers, known as Outdoor Clubs.
Generations later, as vaults opened and permanent settlements began to form, survivors in the region resisted the kind of strict organization occurring in California, instead espousing a philosophy of personal autonomy.
It wasn't until 2165, when a contingent of super mutants came north to plunder, that a region-wide town hall was called to discuss a cooperative defence of the area. People were wary of establishing any kind of designated authority and balked at legislation of any kind, but the threat was serious enough that action had to be taken. The First Cascadia Volunteer Militia was established and deployed to battle. Six years of hard fought war followed, and thousands died, but the super mutants were defeated and the region returned to relative peace.
Over the past 250 years, the hubs of Eugene, Portland and Seattle have grown in size and amenities, but still small when compared to the cities of the New California Republic. Most of the populace of Cascadia still belong to Outdoor Clubs, following herds of bison and living outdoors for at least half the year. A diplomatic corps, selected by vote in the militia, serve as ambassadors to surrounding nations, but Cascadia has no formal government, no constitution, no currency and no formal police force. The people of Cascadia adamantly declare that they have no interest in politics, formal trade, or foreign war, but will defend their homes if pressed.
Cascadia shares long borders with both the NCR and The Midwest Brotherhood of Steel and enjoys good relations with both nations.
