Caesar Altus

Elected by majority of the senate, Caesar Altus became Princeps of Caesar's Legion on June 3rd, 2317. He is known as a reformer, re-focusing the Legion on internal development, social programs and trade.
It is believed that he was born before the Great War, but little is known about his life before 2270. In that year, Caesar Edward's army captured him and sent him to the gladiator pits. There he became known as Pillar. He was a successful gladiator, fighting for 20 years until he earned his freedom. Once free, he started a gladiator school where slave owners could send their gladiators to be trained. Pillar became celebrated for his glory in the pit and used his position to advocate for the living conditions of slaves and commonfolk. His school was very successful, earning him wealth and influence. With a cadre of former gladiators around him and the love of the common people, he was a constant annoyance to the Legion army. They wanted him dead, but he was too popular and well-protected to assassinate.
When Caesar Aurelian Resitutor retired in May of 2317, Pillar found Caesar Edward's death mask, at great personal expense. He had the metal casting brightly polished. At the senate proceeding to elect a new Princeps, Pillar dramatically threw the death mask to floor of the senate, reminding everyone that Edward's foolish aggression once left the Legion in ruins. The stunt seems to have worked, as he won the election by a 2/3rds majority.
Though it is unknown to the public, Pillar's election was influenced by the The Heroes of St. Louis and Modicus, their contact within the New California Republic's intelligence service. This group infiltrated the society of Flagstaff posing as merchant from Cascadia. The group's first choice for Caesar wasn't Vincent Rationalis, the former Minister of Finance, but Vincent refused to run. After Pillar was elected and renamed himself Caesar Altus, he betrayed the Heroes of St. Louis. He could not risk the truth that he had benefited from foreign interference to become known. So, while the Heroes were gathered indoors, agents of Caesar Altus bombarded the group with pulse and stun grenades. The unconscious bodies were taken away. Somehow, Linda and Lex ended up in a convoy run by Tameka the abolitionist. But the fates of Mister Man, Mouse and Zero are unknown. Modicus was not with the group when they were assaulted, so it is unknown whether Altus had him removed as well.
Many of Caesar Aurelian's closest allies were surprised and caught off guard by his sudden retirement. Knowing that changes of leadership in the Legion often result in murder, these Legionaries fled, most of them to the New California Republic. While Caesar Altus has an official policy of acceptance of Aurelian's staff, he keeps them at arm's length in positions of low influence.
Caesar Altus has publicly announced that the Legion will not pursue any expansionist military efforts. But he has also stated that he is not bound by any of Caesar Aurelian's oaths and agreements, including Aurelian's pledge to Great God Mars to never cross the Mississippi River.
