Lurun Mountains

The Lurun mountains are often overlooked when discussing the great mountain ranges of the world. They are fairly low, eroding bit by bit every year. They are snow-capped only in winter, and their highest peak can be reached by walking up a steep trail, no climbing required. They have no great mineral deposits nor exceptional views.

The mountains are most significant for their cultural impact of cutting off Taalora from the Dàn Coast. The Taalorang military relies on indarigs, which are practically unstoppable on flat terrain but terribly suited for taking through mountains. Thus, the mountains hemmed in the expanse of the empire and limited their access to the sea.

The mountains are the ancestral home of the Lochi people, and their trails criss-cross the slopes. Many mountain sides have been terraced for rice paddies. A severe flu epidemic about ten years ago decimated their population, and today, entire villages sit empty. The terraces are overgrown and the conifer forests that cover the mountains are reclaiming the villages. Lochis are still around, but the severe population decline after the flu makes it uncertain how much longer they will last.

Some say the mountains are haunted by the souls of the dead. It isn't hard to come up with ideas of ghosts lurking among the pines trees when a trail ends in a barren village, with skeletons still lying in their homes because there wasn't anyone left to bury them. In any case, a great sadness hangs over much of the mountains. Travellers have said they feel unusually quiet, like the whole range is holding its breath.

This tragic, unassuming little range doesn't get many travellers.
