Kobold Species in Ferlausen | World Anvil

Kobold

Kobolds are a short race of reptilian people, characterized by their long, dragon-like snouts, thick tails, and upright appearance. Along with the dragonborn, kobolds are one of the two Draconic races to survived the Arcane Cataclysm. After the Cataclysm, kobolds trended towards living underground, and it is said that they lost their breath weapons and other draconic traits when magic leaked out of the world.   Kobolds are a highly adaptable race, and may be found in dozens of environments throughout the globe. They are primarily nocturnal scavengers, and in multi-species communities where they are welcomed they often constitute much of the "night life" of larger cities. When living apart from other races, kobolds generally prefer to create their towns and cities underground in complex networks of burrows known as "warrens."

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Kobolds are oviparous, and an adult female kobold generally lays a clutch of 2-3 eggs. Kobold eggs have an average incubation period of 96 days. Newborn kobolds, called hatchlings, are precocial, fully able to walk and capable of hunting within hours of being born. They are also quick learners, beginning to speak within six months of hatching, and reach sexual maturity around 6 years of age.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Although they are omnivorous, most kobolds prefer a high-meat diet, and in many kobold communities eggs are considered a rare delicacy.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Kobolds have an extremely keen sense of smell, comparable to a bloodhound's. Most kobolds can tell the mood of another kobold based on scent, and can identify close friends and family members from scents that are up to three days old. Some kobolds who become familiar with the scents of other races can also pick up on the moods of other species as well.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Kobolds and dragonborn are, in rare circumstances, capable of interbreeding. The resultant hybrid offspring come in two varieties - "koborn," in which the male parent is a kobold and the female parent is a dragonborn, and the much-rarer "dragobolds," in which the male parent is a dragonborn and the female parent is a kobold.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Kobolds come in a wide variety of colors, from shades of blue and green, to yellows and browns, to bright reds and oranges, to deep, almost purple, black. Some kobolds have a metallic gleam to their scales as well. Patterns, such as stripes, spots, reticulation, and piebald coloration, are quite common in kobolds, with patterened variation making up about 40% of the overall kobold population. Both color and pattern run in ethnic groups, so it is fairly common to see a group of kobolds all exhibiting the same-colored and similarly-patterned scales. However, no two kobolds exhibit a pattern that is exactly like another kobold's, even in the case of identical twins.
