Dragonborn Species in Ferlausen | World Anvil

Dragonborn

Dragonborn, also known as Dragon Folk or by the pejorative term "Scalies," are one of two Draconic races that survived the Arcane Cataclysm, the other being Kobolds. Tall, reptilian bipeds with long, dragon-like snouts, and usually sporting horns, spikes, and other draconic traits, dragonborn are a rather rare sight among the races of the world.   Dragonborn were created directly by dragons as a magical species, and as such suffered greatly when the Arcane Cataclysm occurred. As a response to this leaking magic, a group of powerful dragonborn sorcerers and wizards created magical artifacts known as the Dragonstones, sacrificing themselves in the process. Each Dragonstone acts as a huge reservoir of magical energy, and they sustain the life force and limited magical abilities of all dragonborn.   The Dragonstones are spread throughout the world, with at least one residing in each of the seven Great Dragon Halls. Very few people know exactly how many Dragonstones are in existence or where exactly they reside, as they are a jealously guarded secret. Most dragonborn live within or close to one of the Great Dragon Halls, to be close to the source of the power. A dragonborn who leaves the range of a Dragonstone for more than two years begins to weaken and wither, losing their breath capabilities, resistances, and often dying. It is possible to wean a dragonborn off of magic gradually, resulting in what are known as the Forsaken - dragonborn individuals who have lost all magical power and connection to their draconic traits.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Except in very rare circumstances, dragonborn do not have tails or wings. Such variations are magical mutations, generally brought on by prolonged exposure to the Dragonstones or other strong sources of magical energy while in the egg. Responses and reactions to dragonborn with tails and wings vary depending on culture. Some revile them as monsters, while others embrace them as a sign from their ancient heritage.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dragonborn are oviparous, and an adult female dragonborn generally lays a clutch of 1-2 eggs at a time. Newborn dragonborn, usually referred to as hatchlings, are altricial, unable to open their eyes or walk, and covered with a soft, down-like covering of "hatch-feathers." They begin to open their eyes at about four weeks, and begin crawling at around 9-10 months old. Most dragonborn begin walking by 15 months, and the hatch-feathers molt by two years of age. They reach sexual maturity at around 14 years in the case of males and 16 in the case of females, although most dragonborn societies do not consider young dragonborn "adult" until much older than that.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

In rare cases, dragonborn have been known to mate with kobolds. The resulting hybrids are known as koborn or dragobolds, depending on the respective sexes of the parental species.

Most dragonborn have bronze or copperish metallic scales - however, they are also examples of silver, aluminum, golden, and brass dragonborn, as well as brightly colored white, black, red, blue, yellow and green dragonborn. Scale color is usually dependent on ethnicity, so it is not uncommon to see communities entirely made of red dragonborn or silver dragonborn. The ventral scales are generally lighter in color than the dorsal scales.
