Guiomar Vela Cuevas

(a.k.a. Ratcatcher Roger, Evil-Eye Emiliano, Faustino Halfbreeze, Baldomero Bladehead, & Bajardo Blackmane)

Guiomar “Fleetfoot” Vela Cuevas is a famous pirate, known in various ports under various aliases. In the past, he has also taken on the title of "hero" as a member of the Ring & Wren.   A slinky black-coated Tabaxi with wide green eyes and a manic smile, Guiomar typically wears a tattered blue military jacket with various stolen medals pinned to the breast, weathered leather boots, and a beaten leather tricorne hat. He carries his two favored weapons, the Sun Sword and Gullway, at either hip, and two daggers—one in his boot, and the other in his sleeve—for use in close quarters.   Guiomar goes wherever the wind takes him. He is primarily concerned with being able to do whatever he pleases at a whim. A restless creature, his curiosity and boredom have proved often to get him into trouble.

Personal History

Youth

Guiomar grew up in the town of Aldarin, packed into a yellow stucco house with his mother, grandparents, and two older sisters. Although the family was dirt poor, Guiomar remembers these days fondly spent being chased away from clotheslines, helping his grandmother bring in sheep from grazing, or meeting his grandfather at shore with the day’s fishing. He was a constant troublemaker, to the ire of everyone, especially his order-loving older sister Emiliana.   Guiomar's other sister Marcelina taught him how to read, but he skipped school far too often to learn much more than that. The one intellectual skill he did maintain was that of navigation--a skill he learned from his grandfather. Whether climbing, stealing, or playing pranks, there wasn’t a day gone by when Guiomar wasn’t chastised for one thing or another. With his black fur, he was the spitting image of his father, who had long abandoned the family and made a name for himself as a criminal. The family often fretted that Guiomar would grow up to be the same...   At ten years old, a traveling musician saw potential in Guiomar and taught him how to play guitar. His new skill finally brought some praise from his family, but though he loved seeing the joy his music brought to others, his mischievous nature could never be truly subdued. At thirteen, he was imprisoned for the first time. At fifteen, he was forced to flee home after finally going too far and having a warrant out for his arrest, which Emiliana, now working as a soldier, was all too happy to carry out.

Life of Crime

Guiomar moved to Felstadt where he laid low for some time, working in various taverns as an entertainer. However, he was unsatisfied with his meager income and turned to theft to supplement it. Three years later, he was caught and found guilty of various counts of extortion and theft. Sentenced to five years hard labor upon a ship, Guiomar had served only two when the ship was attacked by pirates.   With some quick-talking, Guiomar convinced the pirates to let him join them rather than leave him to die on the nearest rock. His good reflexes, ability to quickly climb the masts, and keen eye made him a good fit, and with someone finally able to put his aimless talents to good use, Guiomar found that he rather enjoyed life as a pirate. He proved to be popular with the crew due to his musical talent and was allowed to keep a guitar on the ship with him.   Over the next several years, Guiomar worked up through the ranks among the pirates. With his charming nature, he was trusted by the crew and became a natural choice for quartermaster, then first mate, then finally captain of his own sloop, the Fickle Fortune. Eventually he branched out and took an even bigger prize: a brigantine that he renamed the Red Morning.   The Red Morning acted as the flagship of Guiomar's own fleet; soon every merchant vessel sailing through his waters knew to fear its dreaded red sun jolly roger. Of course, those who coughed up their loot with no trouble had none from him. He made port often, spending gold as soon as he had gotten it. In each he invented a new name for himself, unwilling to send Imperial soldiers marching back to his mother's doorstep. For several months, the crew enjoyed Guiomar's leadership, even if none of them knew his true name...

The Ring & Wren

One night, a few days after Guiomar and the crew of the Red Morning made port in Felstadt, shadowy figures suddenly swarmed the city. Guiomar and his men fled back to their ship, but the crew was slaughtered entirely. Guiomar alone managed to escape and took refuge in the Temple of Egar at The Rocks. There, he met up with Captain Callistan, who introduced him to the Ring & Wren.   Guiomar helped the Ring & Wren with their ritual to bolster The Rocks by revealing his real name, which was thus far only known to those who knew him as a child, to the god Obsis.   While other members of the party quested to help the Queen in Gold, Roger assisted Jäger Ironbeard in his delegations with the Storm Giant Refugees who'd come to Felstadt.   With the threat of Dhor looking more and more serious, Guiomar broke from adventuring with the Ring & Wren in order to go recruit allies among his old pirate contacts. During the Battle of Marketport, he and Captain Callistan provided sea support.   When the oceans calmed once more, Guiomar returned to the sea, this time not only as a pirate, but also as a hero. With a new crew, he set out to find adventure and possibly track down his father...
