Morhid's Roost

Morhids Roost was a deep cavern on the verge of the Underdark, linked to the surface by old mining tunnels and magma tubes that connected to Dwarven fortress now known as the Broken Citadel. This entire region was under the control of a powerful Kobold tribe that worshiped the dragon Morhid, from which the caverns took their name her personal lair and hoard location.

Geography

The underground region that formed Morhid's Roost was mostly hard volcanic rock. As such it was a honeycomb of old magma tubes combined with a tangling web of Dwarven mining tunnels. Moving deep enough, one would eventually break through to larger cavities such as the one where the Kobolds made their underground city. The area was also heavily shaped by the constant flow of water seeping down from the surface as well as the constant geothermal activity causing quakes.

Ecosystem

There was not an abundance of native animal life within the underground expanses in and around Morhid's Roost. One of the few non-frightening creatures that could be found in decent numbers was blind cave-fish that were used by Kobolds, Duergar, and Drow as a food source. There were also a number of large insects, not to be confused with the large Carrion Crawlers that sometimes stalked the tunnels as well. If one were to venture into the Underdark proper, just past the bounds of Morhid's Roost, they were much more likely to encounter all manner of reality twisting aberrations and monsters that would prey on the unsuspecting, including Grell and Illithids.    Plant life underground was also limited and relatively simple. Lichen and large mushrooms, many of which were bioluminescent, provided a constant light source and could even serve as a food source depending on the variety.

Natural Resources

The long abandoned Dwarven mining tunnels above the Roost were still very rich in gems and precious metals, though the Kobolds did little to exploit this untapped wealth. Rather, over the centuries they had scoured through the ruined Dwarven city and collected much of the material that had already been refined and shaped to offer fitting gifts to their dragon mistress.   There was also no shortage of workable stone available throughout the caves in and about Morhid's Roost. Many Kobold homes were carved into the rock faces of the caves, but in open areas stone huts were equally reliable and sturdy.   Food was somewhat difficult to cultivate so far underground. While some fish and other small creatures could be harvested from the subterranean waterways and tunnels, the amount of food needed to keep the Kobold tribe sustained meant that they had to forage the surface. It was common for teams of scavengers, under the leadership of a specialized "Searcher" to hunt for food or steal it if need be. However, if they encountered non-hostile humanoids on the surface, they would barter if given the chance.

History

The caverns making up Morhid's Roost were formed thousands of years ago when the dragon herself burrowed deep into the center of what is now Inner Jord. There are multitudes of myths regarding events and reasons why she went below ground, but all would be conjecture. What is a fact is that once she went below ground, sightings above ceased. The myths became legends, but still held sway with Dwarven folk for generations. So strong was the aura of power that Morhid held, that a fortress was built on the very mountainside where she was said to have gone to ground.
