Spriggain

The Lady of Weeds

Spriggains are carnivorous nature spirits found often the Aurora region of the The Fantasme.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Spriggains are known for their humanoid appearance, vaguely resembling a human female, hoever they lack a head or legs. Their head is instead a large flower, which remains closed until they eat or are threatening potential enemies. This flower can open up into a five-petaled flower with a mouth in it's center. This mouth has sharp teeth circling it and a whip like tongue.   They move with a the help of dozens of large, thorny vines coming from it's lower half. These vines allow the spriggain to burrow into the ground as well. The thorns on the spriggain are also poisonous and will cause a few seconds of paralysus when they strike.

Genetics and Reproduction

Spriggain are hermaphrodites, and have both 'male' and 'female' reproductive organs located deep inside the maw of the flower. They reproduce by exchanging pollen with another spriggain, which allows them to produce a seed. The spriggain will then find a suitable area and deposit the seed in the dirt before leaving.

Growth Rate & Stages

Like most plants, Spriggain grow from seeds that end up in the ground from a parent. Seedling spriggain are unable to move from their rooted location and resemble more closely to a normal flower. They will eat by luring in small prey like bugs and later birds as they grow.   A spriggain will remain rooted in the ground until they reach maturity, where they will finally be able to start burrowing in the ground and hunt for food.

Ecology and Habitats

Spriggain typically love in deep forests, like where the Giant Sky Oak grow in Aurora. The large trees often can have hallow holes in their bases, which act as caves for to Spriggain where they store food and sleep during the winter.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Spriggains are carnivores and require meat to grow. It will typically hunt by burrowing in the dirt and waiting to feel the foodsteps of a creature. It will then spring it's vines out of the ground, where it will cocoon the creature like a spider and save it to be eaten later.   When it's ready to eat, it will take the cocoon and vomit a digestive acid into it, and then drink the chunky, melted meat broth.

Biological Cycle

During the fall, the spriggains body coloring will turn a orange hue. During this time, the spriggain will be hunting more frequently and keeping cocoons in its territory. During the winter, the spriggain will go into a hibernation like state, where it sleeps to not consume energy. It will occasionally wake up to feast on the meals it had saved up.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The inside of spriggain cocoons a coated in a substance similar to aloevera, and can be used in similar ways. The thorns can also be plucked off and used in potions for pain relief and anesthetics.

Average Intelligence

It is unknown how intelligent Spriggain are compared to humans, as they cannot communicate and act based on instinct most of the time. They don't seem to form groups, and only really acknowledge another spriggain during mating season.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Spriggains lack eyes or ears, making them effectively blind and deaf. However they can feel tiny vibrations in the ground that allow them to detect prey up to a mile away by their movement alone.

"The Spriggain are a most feared beast for those traveling in the deep woods of Aurora. A defenseless traveler makes for the perfect meal for the Spriggain. Keep an ear out for any mysterious rumbling under the ground, that's a sign a spriggain is hunting for you. If you remain perfectly still, you can't be detected, so just stop moving and stay quiet until the rubbling moves away from you and all becomes quiet again.   If you must fight a spriggain, note that fire is a good way to deal with most plants. Don't get let their poisoned thorns touch you or you are as good as captured. It should go with out saying, you should never travel alone in the forest unless you can fight.
