Tristezza Weeping
Countess Tristezza Weeping is the Queen of the Dark Fairies. She loves theatrics, and is a big patron of the arts, bringing a variety of shows to the Dark Forest and even directing a few of her own.
She's a very powerful necromancer, and has always been fascinated with death and the macabre. When her first baby died, she was quick to bring him back to life.
She is madly in love with her husband Vesper Weeping, though the two express their devotion to each other in unordinary ways.
Background
Tristezza was born into royalty as one of eight siblings. Her and her siblings always got along just fine and were raised lovingly by their parents. Tristezza always had a passion for the arts, and especially theatre, and was encouraged to pursue this interest by her parents, especially if it meant keeping her from her other interest in Necromancy. She would often put on little plays with the help of her siblings.Inheriting the Throne
However, one thing always loomed over them. Unlike most royal families, where the heir to the throne is the eldest sibling, for the Dark Royals that does not matter. Instead, any one of the children could become the heir, they would just have to take out the rest of their siblings in a competition for the throne. While to most, this practice may seem quite gruesome and morbid, for Dark Fairies, it is nothing out of the ordinary. The siblings all grew up knowing this would one day be the case, and it never stewed bad blood between them. For death would be just as rewarding as gaining the throne. Well... gaining the throne would obviously be slightly more rewarding. But death just meant gaining a position in the royal council as a ghost like many of the Dark royals before them. Using her wit, cunning, and a few theatrics, Tristezza would be the one to kill all her siblings and inherit the throne. As ghosts, they now monitor her every move as Queen, and get say in most royal affairs. Tristezza appreciates still having her siblings' company, and it's like she never really lost them.Meeting Vesper
After winning the competition against her siblings, it was time for Tristezza to find a partner to take on the throne alongside her. Many fairies came in and out of the manor, all in hopes to impress the Countess and possibly take her hand in marriage. She fancied none of them. Every night, Tristezza would go out to the nearby cemetery, finding it a relaxing reprieve from all the suitors. It was on one of these nights that she'd nearly fallen into a freshly prepared grave. Before she could make the 6 foot plunge, a handsome stranger caught her. He would tell her that he'd prepared the grave for her. That he was going to push her right in, for the sake of his family who wanted to take over the throne. But the moment he saw her beauty in person, he couldn't do it. An assasination attempt? Tristezza couldn't believe it. A man after her own life. She would take his hand, pull, and send the two of them falling. Falling both into a death trap, but also... in love. A few more near death experiences later, all at the hands of Vesper, they were getting engaged. After all these failed attempts at killing his way to the throne, this was the next, most obvious solution. Tristezza wanted nothing more.Losing Her Baby
After her and Vesper wed, the two had their first baby, Edgar. Unfortunately for the pair, however, Edgar grew sick mere months after he was born and succumbed to the illness, losing his life. For someone who had taken the lives of each of her siblings, of whom she loved dearly, the grief Tristezza experienced after losing Edgar was like nothing she'd ever felt before. Sure, he could become a ghost like the rest of her loved ones, but of what good was that when he hardly got to experience life at all? Not wanting to experience this intense loss any longer, and not wanting to let her first son go, Tristezza turned to necromancy. Many Dark Fairies practice necromancy, but a royal promoting the practice? That was frowned upon in order to keep good relations with the other kingdoms, since it was still widely disapproved of by other fairies. The ghosts of her family protested, but nothing anyone said would stop Tristezza from reviving her baby. Edgar was brought back to life, but even with the powerful skills of the Countess, he would remain a baby forevermore. Ten years later, Tristezza and Vesper would have success having more children, a pair of twins, Calliope and Corbin. They are the happiest they could ever be with their unconventional family.Personality
Tristezza is very eccentric, and everything she does has its own theatrical flair. She is very loving, but shows it in her own unique ways. This is most seen with her husband, Vesper. The romance between them is intense, but is often expressed with violent attempts to murder each other. But don't be fooled. This is the most romantic form of affection they could possibly choose to show each other. Besides, they'd never actually go through with it! While her interests may be offputting to... many, she really is very friendly! If you're willing to look past the death and killing and all that, she's super approachable and easy to talk to.Appearance
Tristezza is a tall, pale, lanky woman. She has eight limbs like that of a spider. She has a long, gaunt face with very pronounced cheekbones. Her eyes are red and her hair is black, but she sometimes adds red accents. She wears Victorian-style, gothic clothing, usually in the colors black and red. She enjoys spider motifs. Her aesethetics are just as eccentric and theatrical as she is, and she loves switching it up.Reign
Tristezza is a very communal leader, and she especially loves seeing what sort of artistic endeavors her subjects are pursuing. She'll attend any theatre performances or art shows that make their way into Nyctoflicide, or even put on her own. While necromancy is seen as taboo by most, Tristezza is trying to bring forth a new way of looking at the practice. She wants not just Dark Fairies, but all of Faetalia, to not take death so seriously. Why experience all that dreadful grief when one could always be brought back? She wants to create a new era of necromancy, one that no fairy needs to shy away from. No Dark Fairies should be ashamed of such a beautiful ability!Trivia
- While Tristezza had no qualms participating in the competition that resulted in her winning the throne, she is hesitant to put that upon her children.
- Death is not seen as a negative in Dark Fairy culture, and Tristezza does not see it as such. Despite that, her feelings around loss are complicated, and she'll do anything to not experience the same grief she did when Edgar died.
- Tristezza and Vesper are very much inspired by Morticia and Gomez Addams.
- Another couple they could be compared to is Nadja and Laszlo from What We Do In The Shadows.
