Halaster Blackcloak
This is his story. Originally named Hilather meaning finder of secrets first came to Undermountain in 168 DR to construct his tower. Traveling with seven apprentices in tow he founded his great tower over the great Dwarven realm of Melairbode, or Undermountain in common. The very construction of the tower was impressive with Hilather summoning a legion of fiends and binding them to his service to aid in raising the tower. He then used those same fiends to attack the kingdom and raise it to the ground, and even bellow that.
After his tower was built high and mighty Hilather renamed himself Halaster, keeper of secrets. In time his apprentices all faded from history as did his tower sinking into the very ground it was built on and into the ruins he made. Over the ages the city of Waterdeep was constructed over Undermountain and the now thoroughly insane Halaster faded form memory.
That was until a great dragon burst form the ground in the market square. It was restrained a moment later by Halaster who introduced himself to the city and its people, but only after apologizing for the destruction wrought by his escaped pet. The lords of Waterdeep took action immediately sending team after team of adventurers into the great pit the dragon tore in the ground. Over time The Yawning Portal was built over that same hole to great financial success.
Now Halaster lives as the ruler of Undermountain calling adventurers into the dark, dank, depths he rules where only doom, destruction, disembowelment, and terrible destiny awaits. Now he calls you to enter THE DUNGEON OF THE MAD MAGE! HEHEHEHEHEHEhehehehehe he he...he.

when Durnan opened the Yawning Portal Halaster appeared for the opening day celebrations congratulating him on this new business venture. Durnan was taken aback but over the years has grown to think of Halaster not as a friend but more as a acquaintance or neighbor. Halaster seems to think of Durnan as a old friend.
