The Yawning Portal
Acting as the gate to Undermountian the Yawning portal is the most famous tavern on the Sword Coast. Built and owned by Durnan a retired adventurerwho funded its construction with the treasure collected from his own expeditions into Undermountian. He constructed it in the year 1306 DR with his wife Mhaere Dryndilstann. It is still run by them to this day by both of them and their daughter Tamsil.
Its most striking feature is the twenty foot wide hole in the center of the main room, the eponymous Yawning Portal. Durnan charges one gold coin up and down the lift into the pit. The coin is payed either to him before entering or sent up ahead in a bucket. Many of the taverns regular patrons make bets on the adventuring parties entering the portal with a cry of ¨Ten mirrors on them returning minus the bard, mage, and rouge¨ being common. Many important people from throughout the Sword Coast make stops at the Yawning Portal with the likes of Volo and Elminster being seen there.
