Dragon Isle

Written by TheExasperatedDM

Summary

This Isle is feared by sailors from all regions for the sinking of ships, however, that isn't what they should be afraid of. This Isle is used by dragons for gatherings between them. The Isle acts a neutral ground between dragons with only two rules, No Killing Other Dragons and Do Not Enter Sheep Shore.   Red dragons are occupied by contests for hoards and status in the sand pit. Blue dragons keep a watchful eye on the Red dragons as well as the others. Gold, White, and Silver dragons seem to avoid most contact. Bronze dragons frolic in the water if not causing waves with the Black dragons below the mountains. Brass and Green dragons might be conspiring for all to see in the fields. Copper and Faerie dragons never reveal what they are up too till the deed is done. Relationships between these dragons are tenuous as they wait for the disaster of a meeting to start.

Purpose

The isle was agreed upon by the dragons as a place to gather in times of great distress. The isle did have a bloodily history as many dragons perished when no rules were in place. However rules does not mean peace on this isle, for fresh blood flows as their blood boils. Calling a dragon gathering is not to be taken lightly and the punishment for calling a false gathering is a slow death upon isle peaks. If a gathering is called by the dragons, there must be disaster on the horizon.

Geography

Cliffs for shores, many a ship have been laid to sunder against these sharp faces. Mountains and a ship graveyard encircles this isle protecting it's secret oasis. The west side of the isle has a large pit of sand that any mere human could disappear. A lake of cool fresh water sits almost in the center provides refreshing drink and soothes wounds. A river path carves the mountains to the south-west forming from the lake and down to the ocean. An ocean-side inlet dips into the south-east, fresh water isn't great for all here as it's more fun with fish to play. To the north, a small passage of hills to an outer plain coast lets the sheep roam in peace.

Fauna & Flora

Dragons

Red + Blue

Reds stash their hoards in their bellies as they will not leave their hoards unguarded and their nature of power has them fight in a pit versus each other for gold and status. Blue and Red dragons don't agree as Reds don't recognize the authority of the Oldest Blue, however, they do recognize power.   The Oldest Blue is more powerful than all the Reds thus they leave him be. All other Blues can be harassed and they avoid the pit during the daylight hours. The one rule of Dragon Isle is No Killing. The Oldest of the Blues never leaves the pit to insure no death-duels occur and to re-claim the pit for the other Blues at nightfall.

Bronze + Black

Bronze can be found wherever the water is. Many Bronze use the river and mountains facing it as their caves. They enjoy diving into the water from the various caves in the mountains. However, if a Bronze seeks out an underwater cave they have to compete with the Blacks. Blacks seem to only find these caves adequate for resting. They claim these caves by making pools of acid to discourage Bronzes from taking them.

Gold, White + Silver

Golds, Whites, and Silvers can be found within the mountain, or perched on their tops with other dragons. Whites don't leave the mountains till dusk and return at dawn. They go deeper into the mountain seeking the coldest area and use their breath to make that area even colder. The Golds and Whites usually avoid each other while inside the mountain, but this is not much of an issue as both are few in number. Silvers can lair with both types, though they tend towards the Whites as the two desire the cold.

Brass + Green

Brasses and Greens draw the short stick for places to rest on the Isle. Brass can not compete with the Reds and Blues for the sand pit. Greens will not find any thick foliage, or trees on this Isle for they have be destroyed by the others. Instead, these two share the only open field area on the Isle and seem to get along better than the other dragons.

Copper + Faerie

Coppers and Faeries are the odd balls. They seem to nest wherever they can weasel their way into. Coppers seem to like to stick as close to the water and coast, while, the Faerie don't seem to mind where they rest even afew have been seen in the acid caves with Blacks. The Faerie do seem to find a dragon they try to weasel into their resting area for the duration, however, this doesn't seem to last with their prankster-like behavior.

Natural Resources

Hardy grass thrive here with hungry sheep and dragon's feet to grow against. The Dragon Sheep are a hardy, agile breed capable of climbing up mountains. This skill isn't much help when even the mountains have eyes. These sheep have a fur-like wool that sheds and can act as bedding.   The males possess curled horns, which, they use to contest for females. The females have hooked back horns, which occasionally are used on other sheep. These sheep breed fast and grow as large as a cow's calf, however, females are generally smaller than the males. The males are killed more often due to their size and contest between each other. Elderly, sick, and wounded sheep are quickly devoured when they are no longer valuable for the herd.   The sheep have grow accustom to the dragons on the isle. The only time they truly flinch is when a dragon is flying over head, or a dragon's head is at their level. The sheep have a shore that they use to sleep, graze, and mate away from the dragons. The sheep's shore is forbidden to dragons as to keep the sheep's population up.

Author's Notes

Dragon Sheep are a combination of Soay Sheep and Bighorn Sheep. The dragon behaviors are a combination of fifth and earlier editions of the game. Might add images of the isle later.

So i know very little about your world, but i do think it is interesting and doesn't leave too many questions to be asked. A few practical errors or clunky wording is in there but i always try to look past that. As far as a question, what was the straw that broke the camels back when it came to making rules about the island? Was it a specific event or maybe a specific dragon?

I have not decided if I'll be making up another event for that. There are dragons who live within civilization and I think the dragons would have had a gathering discussing this. I don't know if it will be that gathering, or make up a different event. The red and white dragons are the most aggressive in nature, so maybe they did.

I do have an Introduction to my world if you want to read it. It's just a working one, so there is some ranting bits. It should be easy to find as it's featured on the homepage.

Yeah I'll check it out! Love reading worlds!

An interesting take on the intelligence of Dragons. You rarely see a collection of them, let alone an actual place they have agreed to be neutral ground. You did mention that this place was feared by sailors for the sinking of their ships, but do they know the actual intent of the island? Is this place a complete secret from the rest of the world, or do at least some people know about it? Have there been attempts by an army to conquer the island and quell many of the dragons, or maybe a plan for it?

How long has this island been this sort of neutral ground? Has there been any significant events there worth mentioning (such as dumb humans trying to settle the places, or some particular disagreement becoming really bad?) and if there are, are there any places on the island that still bear the scars of those events?   How big is the island? It has to be pretty massive to accommodate that many dragons?   Keep on world-embering! :)
