Herethis Mines (HER-ath-is)

Basic Information

Platinum is as rare as it is beautiful, so when a very bountiful vein of the precious metal was discovered east of Deastok within the bounds of the Julous Dominion, the greedy lust for such a financial wellspring finally pushed the empire to break their agreements and conquer the dominion. Within the Crown's control, a vast mine has since expanded to extract the extremely valuable metal. However, the mine's proximity to the tenacious ankheg population that infests the Cyrengreen Forest continues to be a challenge. In addition, the Myriad has slowly infiltrated the operations of the mines over the past fifty years, regularly skimming from the platinum haul to fund its endeavors.

A Bit More In Depth

Government

Oriand Smoothfoot has been appointed as the Custodian of the mine for half a decade. He feels as if he is stronger in other talents, and the position almost seems like an insult that will keep him contained.

Crime

About half of the staff of the mine has been recruited by the Myriad at one point or another. They are very careful to avoid any obvious crime, instead skimming the top of shipments, forging records, etc. As such, drunken brawls and petty thievery are nearly non-existent.

Defense

There are no official guards stationed at the Herethis Mines. Despite its importance to the Empire's economy   There are 4 massive ballistae.   There is a wall of sharpened trees surrounding the mine. In the wall is a simple gate.   The entrance to the mine itself is protected by a series of gates rather than guards due to the fact that no guard wishes to be stationed in such an area.

Commerce

No shops have been built here, but there is a blacksmith who has set up shop and steadily improved his forge over the past few decades. He primarily makes mining equipment such as pickaxes and the like. Barter and trade is more plausible than outright buying anything here.

Geography

There are a series of smaller abandoned buildings outside of a walled section. The small 'town' once flourished under the rule of the Julous Dominion, but when the Empire took over the area, they sped up the depletion of the mine. As such, most businesses simply moved on. The wooden wall was erected later when the local ankheg population grew more and more bold/hungry. Inside the wall, are two buildings.   One is a relatively small, clearly new, log cabin with a stone porch and a covered forge. It belongs to Deela, the resident blacksmith of the mines.   The other is a rather monstrous single building with other building built onto it and even on top of it. It was originally the warehouse used by the miners to store the unrefined ore. Now, since they aren't getting nearly as much ore from the mines, about half of the original warehouse has been retrofit into the barracks for the miners. There is a ramshackle restaurant built along the side of the building. It has no chef on duty, instead people are welcome to cook up what they need or want to serve. There is a second floor, there the common room. As small section of which is taken over by the residing Custodian. On top, there is a unstable looking watch tower going 60 feet up, built using what seem to have been thin trees. On top, is a lone man with a crossbow in hand.   https://visitidaho.org/content/uploads/2015/12/Dredge_SaraSheehy.jpg

NPCs

Oriand Smoothfoot: Male Dwarf. He was adopted by humans in the town of Kamordah. He made friends with the nobility and is actually hoping to marry into the Truscan Family. His last name comes from a Dwarvish insult (essentially meaning weak) that he took as his own rather than give it more power over him.   Oriand has been working his way up the ladder, and landed himself the powerful, but not exactly prestigious posistion as Custodian of Herethis Mines. The mines have been plagued with various troubles, from thievery of raw ore to a spider infestation of the mines themselves. He feels as if he is stronger in other talents, and the position almost seems like an insult that is meant to keep him contained.   Deela the Blacksmith: Female Dwarf with a young assistant (Estevan). Southern drawl. Been at the Herethis Mines developing her smithy for nearly 20 years. Has noticed the presense of the Myriad, but has refused to say anything out of fear of retribution.   Estevan Daine: Male Human. Unusually shy for how buff he his. Been working with Deela for 3-4 years now. He has gotten caught up in a recent attempt by the Myriad to capitalize on the spider infestation.
