Passing Glory

Passing Glory is a medium sized merchant galley of the type known as a Lembos, narrower than a sailing ship but broader than a war galley of the same length. A single bank of fifty oars provides its speed, while a stout short foremast carries a canvas dragonwing sail for endurance.

Running up and down the Channel of Precarious Prosperity her 25 tons of cargo space allows a decent profit as long as the the crew trades shrewdly.

Not quite 40m long, with a prominent cutwater that means she must be pulled onto the shore aft first. The middle of the ship is decked, with a cargo hatch towards the aft and the single stayless mast foreward while the sides are the location of the rowers. Between the two steering oars is a small pair of rooms side by side with lattice walls.

While usually well disciplined, the ship is fairly egalitarian and operates as much by consensus as hierarchy. Long term crew members own a share of the ship

Captain Gray Feathers of the Verdant Springs family

A skilled captain with an ironic dislike of authority figures, diplomatic when he needs to be but devoted to his crew.
By far the most experienced sailor on the Glory, having spent almost 15 years sailing the channel on many ships and in many roles. Will occasionally tell the story of his voyage under Captain Island Dancer that earned him the silver to buy his own ship, but the story is never the same twice.

  • Captain by Consensus
  • Bends when he can, mean as a wolverine when he cannot
  • +3 Sail, Socialise, Linguistics (Flametongue, Seatongue, Low Realm, Riverspeak)
  • +2 Presence, Melee
  • Heroic Charm(Sail, Overcome)
  • Essence 1

Kubernetes Coral Wolf of the Red Clay family

In an usual inversion of the normal pattern this scion of a cadet branch of the Red Soil family is better born than his captain. Rank does not always equal cash, so Coral Wolf needs to work for a living, and is responsible for the ownership share of the ship which represents the last significant asset of his family. Decent sailor but takes the lead when dealing for cargos and freight, much to the relief of the captain.

  • Hard working minor noble
  • Enough money for his family can buy any service
  • +3 Bureaucracy
  • +2 Presence, Linguistics (Flametongue, High Realm, Riverspeak)
  • +1 Melee, Archery, Sail

Keleustes Evening Breeze of the Downriver family

Themselves a talented musician they spend hours each day playing complicated melodies to keep the rowers on beat. Treats their players as a teacher and the rowers as a beneficent dictator (or possibly, conductor)

Pilot Hawk from Above of the Passing Glory

Once a raider of one of the local tribes, he was found floating alone and unconscious on the wreckage of a war canoe. When no sign of his people could be found he joined the ship that rescued him as their pilot, calling on a lifetime of travel through the channel. Does not seem to obey, and will not discuss, any of the taboos he would have been subject to.

  • Watchful local pilot
  • No gods, no masters, no taboos
  • +4 Lore(Channel)
  • +2 Melee, Dodge, Sail
  • +1 Linguistics(Tribal Tongue (Southern Channel Islander), Riverspeak)

Proreus Broad Oak of the Siaka's Blood Family

The crew will only discuss his temper with passengers in hushed tones, but the proreus himself carries out his duties with a calm demenour and a voice that carries easily from stern to prow. Spends his day moving about the ship observing and talking with the crew, good at being at the stern when commands need to be passed on but one of his Men is always with the captain or Kubernetes when he is not.

Arms Master Fig Blossom

As a Tengese her lack of a family name marks her as misbegotten, but at a guess the only impact it's had on her life is inspiring her to become dangerous enough to encourage people not to make an issue of it. Expert with sword and spear, she is skilled hand to hand but aware that size matters almost as much as skill so she avoids being unarmed. Whenever the ship stops at a settlement she oversees the crew leaving the ship, makes sure everyone has a small weapon and a buddy, and with something of a disgruntled look hands a cup of maiden tea to some of the crew.

Night-Horizon Cat

Cabin Girl, from the deep west. Wants to be a sailor but doesn't think she wants to be Tya, so a coaster is the best choice for now. Knows lots of stories and legends about the West, doesn't always know which are true. Very interested in learning about the coastal lands.

Stout Brand of the Split Banyan family

One of the more experienced rowers but new to the ship, joined last time she stopped in Scar as Brand had gotten very drunk and missed his previous ship. Taking the inevitable ribbing in good humour, and swearing off hard liquor everytime he has to work hard on his new ship. Claims that his grandmother was a spirit.

Green Verdigris of the Tight Weave family

Only sailor on the ship rated as a Topsman, tries to get the rigging shifted as quickly as possible to give him more time to loaf and tease the rowers, or stay at the top of the mast looking out for pirates, who he seems to be genuinely afraid of.
