Mage's guild of Viseria

Origins of the Viserian Mage's Guild

After the end of the Dragon wars, Thrantos spent time in assisting Faerun IV's warrant of consolidating and strengthening the kingdom of Viseria. Years were spent passing laws, dealing with the consequences of the dragons' wrath, as well as a complex time of diplomacy and alliance with the still-enslaved dragonborn of Draconia. However, in 12VD as Viseria began to settle into a period of peace, Thrantos sought to spread a greater appreciation and understanding of magic through the still superstitious populace of Viseria. Therefore, Thrantos headed south, with the intention of founding a school for the study of magic.   Coming upon a fishing village, placed by the estuary of the White Rush, Thrantos laid the foundation stone of the Mage's guild of Viseria. This first building would later become the Guildlibrary, but for now was the main structure of the newly formed Mage's Guild.   In its early years, the guild was made up predominantly of elves and humans; due to Thrantos ' affections for the elvish peoples and magic, passed down from his wet nurse and instructor Circena, and humans due to their ethnic dominance within Viseria. The guild grew substantially in its first 10 years, with a growing number of dedicated students. Soon, gnomes and halflings arrived from the northern regions of Viseria to study and the first dragonborn student arrived from across the Draconian ocean in 27VD.   With the increase in the presence of magic users, magical crimes became more prevalent, as did the production of dangerous potions. Faerun IV asked Thrantos to help him police the use of magic, as well as teaching it. As a result: all potion brewing done beyond the jurisdiction of the guild was made illegal; local guild embassies were established in major cities to deal with magic related crimes; the role of court mages, to be provided by the guild, were established, in order to inform otherwise superstitious and over-zealous magistrates or lords and prevent their harsh persecution of magic users. This was one of Faerun IV's final acts before his passing.   In his latter years, Thrantos ' characteristic paranoia grew, as Faerun's legal requirements of the guild caused a growth of bureaucracy within the Mage's Guild. Thrantos began to suspect the newfound heads of the magic schools, his own pupils, as coveting his ideas and creations. As a result, Thrantos , the still de iure head of the guild, retreated to his palace, built on the cliff near Thrantium. He would not emerge again until his death in the mysterious arcana-related explosion.

Notable buildings of the Mage's Guild of Viseria

The Guildlibrary contains one of the greatest collections of arcane and historical knowledge across the whole of Viseria, Hurron and even Everon. This building served as the original headquarters of the Mage's guild, upon its founding. In 18VD, with the establishment of the first Mage's tower, it was used more and more as a place of storage; in particular for tomes and scrolls. Over the years, more shelves, floors and areas were constructed, each with their own architect, design and head librarian. The result is a sprawling and seemingly incongruent lattice of aisles, shelves, floors and books. The Guildlibrary is admired for its collection of knowledge and its dissonant architectural design.   The Mage's Tower, edited many times over the years, is a prime example of dimensional magic. One of Thrantos et al.'s early experiments were with dimensional and planar magic. As such, the Mage Tower was crafted in 18VD so as to serve both the need for more space and the desire to attempt to create pocket dimensions and planes. Over the centuries, more and more Mages have added to the floors, dimensions and spaces within the Mage's Tower and so it has grown in grandeur. Thin and tall from without, the Mage's Tower is vast and varied within. Heads of the Mage's guild often choose to craft their own pocket dimension within which to live and work in the Mage's Tower.   The Guildforge and Laboratory were the next in the line of construction. The first Guildforge came with the arrival of gnomish and dwarvish pupils, seeking to combine their study of magic with their traditions of metal working and crafting. Not a fully established structure until 23VD, the guildforge provided a space within which magical weapons and items could be crafted. Reflective of the engineering prowess of the subterranean races, the Guildforge contains many ingenious failsafes and feats of engineering so as to ensure the safety of its users. Meanwhile, the Laboratory was designed soon after Thrantos ' destructive death in 42VD. The dangers of spell-weaving, as well as potion brewing, were already apparent to the students of the guild. On the other hand, mages have forever had a penchant for overlooking the risks of magic and indulging a sense of invincibility. Thrantos ' own passing seemed to spark a switch in attitudes and thus the Laboratory was crafted. A place designed for experimentation, the walls are 12 feet thick and crafted with protective runes and enchantments, so as to ensure the safety of those within the guild and the city at large.   The Entry Chamber is a magnificent building of exquisite artistic design. Constructed after the Viserian Civil War of 263VD, it represented the renewal of the kingdom and of the Mage's Guild alongside it. Built at the same time as the protective wall, the Entry Chamber provides protection as well as architectural and artistic impact. The stain glass window, crafted from Draconian glass, is indicative of the positive Viserian-Draconian relations of the late 3rd Century VD.
