Thrantos
Thrantos' Origins
Thrantos, was born in a time at which all magic was regarded with fear and uncertainty in human society. Those who displayed any sign of arcane aptitude would in one village be put to death, in another be hailed as a god or in another hidden from the sight of all their neighbours, never to be seen again. During the time in which Thrantos was born great dragons roamed the sky, spreading terror and devastation in their wake. Their dragonborn slaves would follow and pick bare the cracked bones that made up the remains of the charred villages and towns. Thrantos displayed signs of magic at an early age and was hidden in a cave by his mother, who told those around her that he was stillborn. Only her and the elven wet nurse knew the truth. The boy was alive and the boy was magic. Thrantos’ Mother Danaia and his wet nurse Circena came to the cave each day and taught him many things. Circena herself was somewhat magic and passed down what lore of elven magic she remembered to the young child. Thrantos grew stronger day by day and so did his magic. Finally, when he was a young man, a dragon began to lay waste to his village and Circena ran to his cave, begging for his help. He emerged from his clandestine cavern and slew the beast with his wizardry. The town was amazed and hailed him as a hero. He convinced them that the time for magic had come, as had the time to fight. They ought no longer to live in terror of the beat of scaled wings, but to emerge into the light of day as he had. He went round from town to town, gathering supporters and looking in particular for anyone gifted with magic amongst them. These magical apostles became his first students, and they shared with one another what little knowledge they had garnered of the arcane arts. The Dragon Wars
Thrantos soon arrived at the old capital of Amonir and came to the king of his kingdom of Viseria, Faerun IV. He convinced Faerun to raise an army of steel and spells to fight off the dragons from their shores, never to be seen again. Together they campaigned for many years until finally, through much bloodshed and hardship, they vanquished the wyrms and expelled them from their lands. As they fought, they assisted the dragonborns in rising up against their enslavers, often succeeding in convincing them to fight before sending them back to Draconia. The Founding of Thrantium and the Mage's guild
In his latter years Thrantos established a school of magic, one for all races and walks of life to come and study in order to better the world with their gifts. For many years the school functioned in harmony, growing into the sprawling town of Thrantium, populated with the providers of all the needs of the school. As Thrantos got older, however, he became more eccentric, paranoid and suspicious. He began to distrust his own pupils and felt cheated out of his own creation as the bureaucracy of the school began to extend with the growing power. He had been the first to set the idea for regulation of magic, as well as of emulating his and Faerun’s relationship with the post of court wizard for Counts and Courts of Viseria. Now he felt that unfriendly eyes were seeking his power and ideas for their own. He retreated to his castle, situated on the cliff edge and undertook his experiments in solitude.Thrantos' Death
One day, he was working on the creation of a new spell when something went wrong. In a thunderous flash of blue arcane energy, the whole of Thrantos’ castle was eviscerated, the majority of it tumbling like a flock of starlings down the sweep of the cliff face to the cold Draconian Ocean below. The city was named Thrantium in his honour. The guild maintained its original intent of teaching beyond this, but also expanded upon the regulation of magical items, spells, policing, potions, amulets and appointments. To this day the guild provides courts with magical advisors and has a grip on the education and commerce of all that is magical within Viseria.
